If I make the move to a 8700k how much performance am I losing by sticking with my current 3200MHz ram over buying say 4000Mhz ram?

I only recently bought some 8 pack 3200Mhz ram for my Ryzen set up but it seems it is not capable of running at that speed using my 1700.

Also in terms of mobo do I get better chances in the overclock lottery by spending the extra £50 (so around £200 mobo) on a better mobo as opposed to a middle of the road one from about the £100-150 range?

What board do you recommend?

And finally.... what's a expected easily achieved overclock on the 8700k?

And it will play nice with the ram at XMP at the same time?

---

Internet seems to suggest there are minimum gains to be gained from faster memory on this platform over 3200MHz.

---

The other thing is presumably my Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz ram will work just fine with the Intel kit?

You testing the other ocean as well? I've just made the same move. There is minimal difference but the 8Pack RAM can push up that far (or so I've read). 3333c14 is certainly possible and I think c15 you can get 3600.
I opted for the cheapest ASUS board in Z370 flavour (£110) as I won't be going balls out with an overclock as the "closest" competitor can't even match the all core frequency.

I'm aiming 4.6-4.8 with Noctua DH15 which I'm told it should do without issues or delid.

Do you know if the 8 Pack ram will work in a Z370 mobo?

Almost everything else is listed as compatible except Z370.

I'm gonna wait of course for Ryzen 2700x to launch.

I just impulse bought the 8 Pack Ram as mine after 8 months decided it wasn't stable at 3066MHz anymore.

But then if it also cant handle the 8 Pack ram at DOCP whilst being overclocked then we'll that was the last straw.

Is the Z370 platform easy to overclock the cpu?

And ram overclocking is simple select xmp?

This is what I was told the 8 Pack ram would be like on my Ryzen. But alas not.

It works just fine at DOCP with CPU at stock but I've lost at least 200MHz maybe more from my overclock.

Not making the most of a 1080.

Sounds like you bought the Prime Z370?

So even with a budget focused board you are ok running your ram at xmp and running an overclock?

For me, even with a 1070 it was worth it. The 1700 didn't have the balls for 144hz at 1080p nor 1440p tbh.
What reviewers won't show you is how they compare in multiplayer games. You should certainly see a difference with a 1080. They are warm buggers though, I delidded mine.

The boards only start to come into their own when overclocking but even so that prime has proven to be a decent board. Don't worry about the ram, the IMC is very good on the 8700k.
You'll be able to hit XMP speeds with no issue I reckon.

I have no problem spending a little more. What board do you recommend?

The Prime is quite cheap if you look around.

Was looking at the Taichi but I don't like the look of the BIOS and I am used to Asus's now.

If money isn't a problem then I have no issues recommending the hero x. I love this board but truthfully its massive overkill. I can run my CPU at 5.0ghz and memory at 4000mhz without issues on this board but as I said probably overkill for most.
Unfortunately with ASUS its pretty much go top end or go home now, the strix boards aren't that much cheaper than the maximus tbh.
I've heard good things about the gigabyte boards too.

I just had a Google for that mobo. It's not silly expensive but around £90-100 more than the Prime.

Even the Prime will allow me to reach a decent overclock on both CPU and run memory at XMP? I won't be deliding and I will stick with my 3200MHz ram.
