Hi all,

What size rad and reservoir would be needed for a 8700k running at 4.9, maybe wanting to push to 5.0?

Deciding between the core P3 and P5 case and that may make a difference!

Just the CPU and no GPU? If it's just the CPU then a good 240/280mm rad will have plenty of headroom. The reservoir can be as small or as big as you like. To be honest though, it's going to cost a lot of money for a custom watercooling setup to cool just the cpu and I don't think I would do it just for that. When you consider how much it costs for a good rad, pump/res, CPU block, tubing, fans and coolant then adding a GPU block at the same time isn't that much more expensive. You would need a 360/420mm rad though, maybe more depending on the GPU.

A AIO or very good air cooler will work out much cheaper than custom water for just cooling the CPU.

Problem is I have a gtx970, don't really see the point of cooling that.
I'm basically doing it for looks/something to do, but I guess I could go triple or quad rad, then it's OK for gpu cooling in the future.

How efficient the radiator can be is one thing. Quite often the heat doesn't even reach the surface of the chip will o be in contact with the waterblock. That's when the frustration starts.
A good 240 or 280 rad should be fine. Thicker, better. And you can always use push/pull to increase the radiator's capabilities if needed.
Also depends on the voltage used.
About including a GPU block later, I would recommend a big as possible you can fit and soft tubbing. When upgrading GPU, just add the block and run new tubbing.
