I have already got installed an 8800GTS 320MB OC on Vista 64bit and am upgrading to the same card but the 640MB version. Do I need to remove or upgrade the drivers at all or can I just swop them over?

Thanks

Do I uninstall them from the remove programs icon in control panel first and then use driver cleaner or just use driver cleaner straight away without uninstalling them first?

One up, driver cleaner to just sweep through and make sure all parts of driver have been gotten rid of.
Why, it is the same card

Just take out the old card, put in the new card and reinstall the drivers, I have done it this way with a MX400 > Ti4400 > 6800NU > 7800GT > 8800GTS > GTX280 and never had problems, going from ATI <> Nvidia maybe.

Is it though

Ive gone from from 8800GTX to 8800GTX and again from 8800Ultra to 8800Ultra and each time needed to re-install drivers.

Even if the display looks ok like i said its just standard practise.

Only time i havent needed to was when i implemented SLI though i fresh installed drivers just to be sure.

Installing drivers over other drivers without propelly un-installing the old ones can cause no end of problems.

I see this all the time, yet have never done this and never had problems, so either I was very lucky or the problems occur very rarely.

I would advise to do it going from ATI to Nvidia or the other way around, maybe that is where all the problems come from.

Not so much nowadays with drivers though but back a few years i used to have loads of issues so its become standard.

Just standard thing for me to do :) im a bit ocd when it come to doing things with computers, i think if i do it propelly first time then il have less problems later.
