One look at the 2900xt 1Gb version and i would say definitely not, its not required.

i've seen romours that they will be later on by certain manufacturers.

However I don;t see the point unless you plan to keep for 3 years as even crysis doesn;t give the 2900xt 1gb any advantage over the normal 2900xt
