8800 GTS 512mb "squealing" on Crysis menus

I got a PNY 8800GTS 512mb last week. All was fine playing UT3. Yesterday I fired up Crysis, and in the menus the card "squeals". It sounds like an electric buzz. It's definitely not the fan, and from what I can make out it only happens on those menus, not in the game itself - at least from what I can hear, but I do have damaged hearing. I'll need to do more testing to be sure and will try other games.

So my question is, is this normal or should I RMA?

Thanks!

Matt

my X1900XT used to do it

my 8800GTS 512 doesn't do it so much, but does in ATI-tool

I think its oscillating inductors, nothing to worry about - although annoying

My GT does the same on the menu. no idea what it is but it goes away like you said.

thankfully only in ATI Tool -but ATI Tool is APPAULING on my GTS

it sounds like a mini siren - going up and down in tone !

its something to do with frame rates I think - same on my X1900XT ... if you had FRAPS running you'd see that in the menus, and ATI Tool 3d spinning thing, that the frame rates would be like 150fps... that causes some sort of oscillation on some boards I think.

Basically these things are built to a price - andI think there are some variations in components due to the specc'ed tolerances - hence some do it - some don't -luck of the draw I suppose.

Thats the sound of a 'terrified' Video Card.:D

My GT does it, Ive got fraps running and the opening brand vids and the menus run at 2000 to 4000 fps! this seems to be the problem...

Quite why they need to run opening EA and Intel vids at 4000fps is beyond me though!

My 8800gt dose it continuously will playing COD4 but it's the only game I've tried since getting my new system. TBH if I can find a solution soon I'll RMA the card. It's the only card I've owned that's made anything like that sound, and it's the sort of thing that really bugs me.

I've heard it can be caused by an under powered PSU so I'll try changing that first.
