Whilst playing CoD4...my PC froze up....had to hit the reset button to get anything to happen.

Once I had loaded back into desktop I fired up Nvidia monitor and it was showing my GPU to be at 90C...so just to be sure I stripped the PC and have given it a big blow out also its probably the hottest/humidest day its had to work with, crappy UK weather lol.

Once I had replaced everything I fired up the nvidia stabilty test....the temp began to climb and was getting close to 100C!

Now I'm wondering if its a fan problem...the Nvidia monitor is showing a speed of 675rpm. Seems a tad low if compared to the system fan...31,000+ rpm

I had the exact same issue that you're having and I did as Dyson has suggested.

For some reason the fan on my card wasn't spinning up with core temp.

I now have profiles for fan speed controlled by temp and core and mem clocks controlled by launching 3d apps and it works brilliantly.

Hmm I never had any problems with my 8800GTS and definitely no where near that temperature even on mega hot days. Perhaps the cooler is not seated properly onto the card? Might be worth trying to reseat it and applying some better thermal paste, saves messing around with the fan profiles.

Also I'd edit out the swear from your original post before mods see it :)

My GTS was exactly the same, just used Rivatuner to constantly put the fan to 65% and stays around 60 on load
