8800 GTS Issues

I'm currently running a BFG 8800 GTS OC 512MB in my system but I have noticed that under Vista and Windows 7 it has issues. It works fine for a while but after a certain period of time the whole system will slow down. I think it has issues with one or more components in my system (spec in sig + 150Gb Raptor, XFi Fatal1ty).

The issue strikes randomly but almost every time I use my computer, the problem then remains until I do a reboot, sleeping the computer keeps it in the 'broken' state when woken up (this also eliminates heat as a cause). After the reboot the computer will work flawlessly until the problem hits again causing slowdowns.

The slowdowns do not seem to be directly related to the graphics card, some examples where the slowdown is evident:
  • Webpages will scroll eratically, especially ones with flash content.
  • Opening a small JPEG image in photoshop takes up to a minute.
  • Transcoding a video takes about 10x longer.
  • Importing into Audacity takes about 10x longer.
  • Games take very long to launch and become very slow.
  • Web browsers seem to be more vulnerable to locking up and crashing.
  • Many other apps become slow.

Again all of the above problems disappear after a reboot until some 'trigger' starts it all off. This problem has been affecting my system for about 8 months now even after several formats and even a switch to Windows 7 Beta.

When I swapped the 8800 out with an ATI x1950 pro everything worked fine, no sign of this problem at all. The 8800 worked fine in another Vista machine with no sign of the problem, leading me to think one or more of the components in my system doesn't like the 8800.

I'm not expecting anyone to be able to help here but it seems like I'm going to have to swap my 8800 GTS to get rid of the problem.

I have RMA'd the 8800 GTS and the replacement does exactly the same thing so it has to be a bad hardware combination or something.

At this moment in time iTunes becomes very jumpy and jumps up to 100% CPU when playing any protected AAC track (any other tracks are fine). Twhirl (a Twitter client written in Adobe AIR) takes ages to launch and is not responsive, taking up 100% CPU. Firefox takes up 100% CPU on launch and doesn't open for at least a minute.

A reboot will resolve all of these problems but it wouldn't take long before something starts it off again. These problems seem to be unrelated to the graphics card yet swapping it with the x1950 Radeon doesn't result in any of them occuring.

My exact hardware is:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz Conroe
  • 4x 1GB DDR2 GeIL Ultra Low Latency PC6400
  • Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Motherboard
  • Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty
  • Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA
  • Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM SATA
  • Belkin F5D7000-UK Wireless PCI Card
  • BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC G92 512MB

It's really annoying, I guess I'm going to have to get a completely new card from a different series.
