8800 GTS Low FPS with CPU overclock!!!

OK, I have overclocked my E4300 to 3.1 GHz ORTHOS BETA stable 10h. My problem is this.

If the system is not overclocked 9x200 = 1.8GHz (yet all the voltages in the bios are the same as if overclocked) the FPS i get in a test program here are great at around 280 FPS. As soon as I go to 9x201, the FPS drops 2/3rd's.

-Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
-GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
-BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
-Western Digital Caviar RE 320GB 3200YS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Using F10 BIOS on the DS3 and set PCI-E in stone @ 100MHz.


I have tried setting the BIOS to defaults and trying again and re-installing latest drivers from nvidia.


Something weird is going on, can anyone here be a saint and tell me what?

Ah ha. I have a DS3 motherboard. Any idea's where I could find this setting?

EDIT: Hmmm, I cant seem to see a setting in the BIOS for it. I have used ctrl-F1 for hidden setting (ram timings) and still cannot see anything relating to PCI-E exept voltage which I dont want to adjust.

Exelent, thanks guy's. Found the culprit:



EDIT: Imageshack is a little slow at the moment. CPU-Z is reporting a PCI-E Link Speed of 1x

Now, how can I go about resolving this? I can't see a "PCI-E Link Speed" or similar in the Gigabyte 965P - DS3 F10 Bios??!!

Yup, the PCI-E is locked to 100 and NOT auto. Still no joy. By the way, it would appear I was a little over the top. I can OC to 9x210 no probs. I noticed that at 9x250 there were problems. Please keep the help coming guy's. It's great there are people out there willing to! Thanks!
 
Yep, as Ulfhedjinn stated in the thread linked above, it's a common problem with 965 boards. My p5b-deluxe has the same 'quirk' though upping the pci-e frequency to 110Mhz does the trick, other users have reported upping the NB voltage to the next value and leaving the PCI-e clock at 101 also does the trick.

Is upping th frequency here safe for the GPU? I really dont want to wreck £200 worth of the BFG Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB.
 
I'd say 110Mhz is as safe as running the default speed of 100Mhz, or at least I've never heard of a card fail due to it running on a slightly clocked pci-e bus. I wouldn't recommend pushing it much higher though - 120Mhz max, as it can corrupt data on your sata drives (board dependant). That been said, if 110Mhz doesn't fix your problem then I highly doubt 120Mhz would make any difference anyway.

Well, I gave it a go. Running @ 3.0 GHz with PCI-E @ 110MHz giving me back my PCI-E x16! Thanks guys, much abliged. I hope this thread sheds light for others with the same issue. I will try lowering the 110MHz step by step and let you know what I find.
 
OK, after a little "here and there" I found a happy medium.

Running now:

e4300 : 1.4v 3.0 GHz 9x334
PCI-E is set at 103MHz to sustain PCI-E x16

101MHz did not do the trick and stayed at PCI-E 1x, 102MHz and the PC would not post. 103MHz was the magic number for me. I am much happier with this.

Does anyone know the "ins and outs" of what is happening when the PCI-E frequency is increased?

My BFG 680i and BFG 8800 GTS together auto-overclock the PCI-E bus from 100 to 125 anyway, so 110 should be fine. Good way to squeeze a bit of extra power out of the system (reach that 10k in '06 for example)
