Hi Guys, i have just purchased a new system spec as follows:

C2D e6300 Stock
2gb Corsair Dominator memory
Gigabyte DS4
BFG 8800GTS Stock
150gb 10k rpm SATA

I have been experiencing some performance issues in games i have been playing. Enemy Territory has an annoying sound skip and mouse jump every few seconds. In Prey whenever i have a Neon Light, Slot machine or TV in the characters FOV my fps dramatically drops. Also the main menu is fine but the system menu is slow as a dog!

I am getting 11478 Marks in 3DMark05 is this the norm for my spec?
Any idea's about the sound/Mouse jumping?

I may try a fresh install of windows but only once i know that it will help.

Cheers

The only thing I can think of from the top of my head is overclocking that E6300 to a minimum of 2.8GHz to alleviate some bottleneck. The 8800GTs are monsters, and you're going to need to push the rest of your system as hard as possible to pick up the slack.

If that doesn't work, then there must be some driver or hardware fault. 3D Mark 05 seems fine though, tried 06?

I'd clock the c2d and gts as that might help!

My system gives me just under 13,000 in 3dmark05 and yours should beat that when it's properly persuaded!

As for the stuttering i installed Chronicles of Riddick last night and had a similar problem to the one you're having with enemy territory! I spent an hour or so trying to figure out why it was running real slow and jerky! It turned out the game wasn't running well with the dual core X2 and that by disabling one of the cores the performance leapt up to what i'd first expected!

Don't know much about enemy territory or prey but it could be one reason for the performance issues! I assume your games are fully patched?

Hope you get it sorted! :)

06 is 7591 Marks, My 7800gt + 3700+ San Diego ran the same games at the same detail/res and neither of them gave me any problems, a higher spec pc should handle this straight off.

Could this possibly be down to a poor instalation of windows/drivers?

Could be the install of windows! Strange that the 3dmark stuff seems to be bang on yet your performance in those games is lacking!

Have you tried any other games?

i could try quake 4 or X3, maybe anno 1701 to test that style of game as well.

will get back to you in a min

Assuming you have a similar performance potential (going by those 3dmark's) to my own machine you should be able to run quake4 with everything turned up to full (except AA which i run at 4x) at 1680x1050. It should run nice and smooth!

Those 3DMark scores seem low, at default 8800GTS speeds I got 12553 in '05 and 7951 in '06 with a AMD X2 @ 2.5Ghz so I would expect a Core2 Duo to score higher.

yep those scores are low

on stock clocks you should be between 8000 and 9000 in 3D Mark 06, overclocked will be near 10k or more if you have a good cpu clock, see sig.

Check and make sure you dont have AA or AF on.

well a fresh install of windows and alls still the same. think this might be a hardware problem :(

Its not the cpu being a bottle neck thats causing the ET problem because this game is so old.

The driver installation for the motherboard is rather choppy i find, have to do most of it manually (The express install doesnt install anything!)

Any other suggestions welcome

Cheers

oc your cpu

dude overclocking wont effect the problem i have with enemy territory. I don't really care about the synthetic 3dmark score at the moment i just wanna shoot Germans lol

How do you know overclocking wont help?

Have you tried overclocking the cpu?

I suggest you do.

A stock 6300 is unbalanced with a 8800 series card.

Get it to 3ghz at once and help that 8800 along.

Surely a 1.8ghz cpu and an 8800gts at stock speeds can handle enemy territory. the game i played way back when i had my 1gig thunderbird & ti200!

Its as if something else is accessing the hard drive and hogging the cpu for a fractioin of a second every 2-3 seconds.

I agree Hades - mentioned it earlier in the thread. ;)

Give it a go!

Must have missed that one soz. no matter anyway because the problem still remains with just one core assigned to the game. gawd this is driving me nuts

Aha! setting all processes to core 0 and ET to core 1 has fixxed the problem. one of the processes running in task manager must be hogging the cpu every few seconds. i will hunt the little begger down but now for some spangly new graphics and german killing :p
