8800 GTS problem

I've just bought a second hand 8800 GTS but when i try to install i'm getting a post error code which relates to bad video card/ram. Would this happen if my power supply is not powerful enough? or is the card dead.

My psu is a Tagan 430W with 28A on 12V rail which is just on the recommended specs and i want to check if this could be the problem before returning it as i got a bit of a bargain.

Thanks

EDIT changed psu as its actually 430w with 28A on 12V

I had this with an issue with an ASUS motherboard. I had a P5N e SLI, the cards fan would spin slowly after an intial freeze (if that makes any sense). I have the 8800GTS from BFG and now run a DFI board,no problem now.

i have the same motherboard too.... i have no problems atall with my gts...

could it not be something else... or have i hit lucky maybe with my mobo..

I have an 8800GTS with a P5N-E SLI and it works no problem at all.

What post code are you getting?

Do you have the PCI-E power connector plugged into the card?

what are the rest of your system specs?

Have you tried just one stick of memory?

Also put the memory in the black slots :)

POST code is one long beep and 3 short ones,

From http://bioscentral.com/beepcodes/awardbeep.htm

"1long, 3short No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card."

Rest of specs
ASUS p5n-e sli
2gb kingston 667 ddr2 (2x 1GB)
Core 2 Duo 6320 @ 2.6ghz
2 sata drives
7600 GT (obviously the 8800 is a replacement for this)
Tagan 420 W psu

Works fine with 7600 back in ,memory is in yellow slots i think, and yep pci-e power is connected to card

Put the memory in the black slots as the yellow ones are known to have problems.

Have you tried a single stick of RAM.

Mite be worth resetting the CMOS and see if that helps

Other than that can you try the card in the lower PCI-E slot?

You could also try setting your cou back to stock as overclocking it may well be pushing the psu just over it limits

**EDIT**

According to this youre using 426w with the 8800GTS and your cpu @ 2.6Ghz., so that could be the problem

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

With the 7600GT you only use 359w

Setting your cpu back to stock gives 278w with the 7600GT and 345w with the 8800GTS

I've tried it with stock clock settings as well, i thought the 2nd pci-e slot could only be used in sli mode?
Will give it a shot and also swap over the ram as you said, i've seen a few posts relating to the yellow slots but i haven't had a problem till now

Swapped memory- no joy

One stick only - no joy

Tried lower pci-e slot - no joy

All with stock clock settings

I've got a mate with a better psu where i can try the card later but he also has the same board so if its a mobo/ card conflict i assume the same would happen.

If it is power related i thought it would at least post then maybe give up while playing a demanding game? thats what my 9800 pro used to do a few years back

Unfortunately, I think those codes are wrong for that motherboard, I think Asus has changed them.

When I started up my computer yesterday I was getting a series of continuous short beeps, which, according to the above link, was bad ram.

So I ordered some cheapo ram so I could test (and have some back-up ram, just in case), just to make sure, before RMA'ing the ramback to Crucial.

I spent some time yesterday putting one stick of ram into each slot one at a time, and it seems that both sticks were gone. Just to check, I booted with no ram in, and then got the one long and three short beeps... "oh ****!" I thought, "don't tell me the graphics has gone as well!!" Which started me thinking that maybe the powersupply had gone, taking the graphics *and* ram with it...

So, today, after ordering more ram, I decided to have one last check over everything... and noticed that the power cable to the graphics card wasn't fully in! I then remembered I had a little cable tidy the other day, and must have not plugged it all the way in..

So... after the long story... it seems that continuous beeps is a graphics card problem, and one long and three beeps is a ram problem... which isn't the same as the link above.

HTH

Rob.

I have the Asus motherboard and an 8800gts 320mb card, and have no problems whatsoever. So maybe u have a duff card

I know 3 people who had issues with that graphics card and board. Take it back to the shop and try and swap it for a different model.

Second hand you say? Could have bought a duff card...I'd suggest testing the card on another computer to make sure.

Yeah definately. There is a chance the seller knew it was duff
