Hi

Currently thinking about buying an 8800 gts to replace my 7900 GS and have just become aware of some sort of "slowdown problem" on 8800 gts's.

Question... what's the story here, I've GOOGLEd it and am wondering how much of a "problem" this really is!?

Also... anyone out there with the:

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS KO ACS3 320MB

IE. the one with the uprated cooler.

and if so, what's your opinion of it.

The ACS3 KO one is the card i have and its awesome.. currently overclocked it some more to 650 / 2000 and its really good!

The slowdown problem was worse with the drivers a few months back, not to bad now... the problem occurs when the memory gets filled up, it doesnt clear like its supposed to. If you have an already fast pc then you can quickly alt+tab in a few seconds and its fine. I read that nvidia are working on a fix for it, but im not too sure.

The last set of drivers were meant to fix it but didnt.

The slowdown isnt too bad anyway really...only ever bad on games where the fps is already low (which isnt very many really)

I only had one problem with the "slowdown" issue and that was in C&C3. Had the card replaced by BFG (2 day turn-a-round) and it's been fine. I am running the latest beta's which are meant to help with the issue but nVidia are apparently working on a fix. But since replacing the card I haven't had any problems.

:)

Thanks for that.

Looks like it's not "that" much of a problem then.

Now all I've got to do, is make the decision as to whether to buy the card, or not! Might make sense I suppose to wait until I get Bioshock and see how it runs on my current card. Though some people should have the demo up and running in the not to distant future.

There must be some sort of headroom on these cards if you can push a card that's already fairly aggressively overclocked, that high.

Ive had mine at 690/2200.. but noticed a few artifacts (not loads, but a few), probably shoulda put the fan speed up. Its a quiet card too btw.. at 75% fan speed, my psu fan drowns it out.

Also looks excellent in a windowed case!

Now just got to decide if it's the 320mb, or the 640mb card! Only got a 19in TFT, so common sense says the 320mb version. Though I'm wondering if anything in the next 12 months (average graphics card replacement timescale for me) that might benefit with the 640mb version? How long's a piece of string I suspect is the answer.

640mb. Yeah I'm biased. :p

320mb will be fine but for a few quid extra to ensure you don't have to mess around with the 320mb slowdown nonsense you could just get the 640mb version, makes sense doesn't it.

Or wait for a few months for the 9800 series of cards to come out resulting in a price drop across the 8800... :)

Sensible advice. I'll see what people say about Bioshock first. I'm sure there must be loads of peeps out there with a 7900.

Just wondering about this slowdown issue, as i have a BFG 8800GTS. Would the slowdown cause almost lag like problems? I'm currently playing UT2k4 and every now and agian i seem to warp. It causes me to run off edges etc, as one minute i'm running up to it, then i warp forward and i'm dead lol!

I'm pulling what's left of my hair out, as it's not a ping issue, and my upload speeds are good!?! I'm getting 90fps too, so i've no idea what else it could be!?!

Not a slowdown issue.. the slowdown only reduces FPS from say, your 90 to like 70 or lower, not causing a warp effect

If it slowed from 90 to 70 you would not even know, read threads here and through Google, it makes the game unplayable, peeps have to Ctrl+Alt+Del out of game and then back into game again.

It varies... i get it that bad in some games (STALKER, Oblivion) but only slightly in others like TDU and BF2, as examples

O'well... made a decision at last. Decided my current card is struggling in Bioshock demo a bit and have decided on a:

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB

Be interested to see what difference this makes.
