On my old 7800GTX, it ran at two different speeds - 2D and 3D.

On the 8800GTX, there doesn't seem to be an option to do that and it's idling at around 80C. Am I missing something?

Does the 8800GTX run at full speed at all times?

80'C idle is a bit on the high side of reported temps that I've browsed by on this forum as well as extreme overclockers. I think between 55'C to about 70'C is the average range.

I might be wrong though as I've been smoking the waccy today. Team Nvidia will sort you out. (Team Nvidia ran by EasyRider and Loadsamoney) :p :D

To lower the heat I'll leave to the Nvidia boys as the last Nvidia card that I had (BFG 7600GT OC) lasted the whole of 3 weeks before I got the x1900.

I'm using "Automatic fan control" which is silent and idles at 80C. If I up the speed to 70%, then it idles at about 73C.

I read in this forum that some people's 8800GTXs idles at around 60C, are they running the fan speed at 100%?

the gainward gtx comes with a programme called expertool that allows you to ajust 2d and 3d fan speeds aswell as overclock it

8800 series are fully driver controlled no 2d/3d switching as such
Tried for about a day to edit the GFX bios to cool the thing down in Desktop...Gave up
River tuner (bit complicated) will do what You want but I could not get it to work after S3 standby

Ati tool 0.26 lock all the sliders and set 2D at 250 core 300 memory for desktop and allow it to auto switch back to default timings when going into 3D, Should knock the temps down by 15c for You.

I could not find a better way of cooling the thing in 2d ! Seems Little Point in Just setting a High fan speed to overcome poor driver/bios programing, I always thought ATI was Poor with their new Control panel etc Boy was I shocked with Nvidias efforts, Anyone know how to set 3d gamma ?
