8800 GTX needs a high range CPU??

Thats the biggest myth regarding this series, and it's something thats always been talked about when a new generation arrives.

I play at 1280*1024 on my x2 4800 @ 2.65. I've upgraded from a X1900XT. I'm supposed to be CPU bound on some titles, but my eyes don't lie :D The performance gains I see all across the board are nothing short of staggering.

I've also gone from 4xAA 16xAF to at least 8xAA and 16xAF, and everything looks absolutely stunning. This thing laughs at everything I've thrown at it.

I have to say, even if I'm not getting the full whack out of this card as is claimed by some sources (and I just can't see it that way), it's still been worth every penny.

This is the most substantial upgrade I've ever done since I picked up a GeForce2 GTS a few years back.

I'm expecting to upgrade my CPU next year, so I may well see some extra benefits there - that would only add value to the purchase.

To any doubters, I would say that you have to see it running in real world gaming before you can make any real evaluation - please don't give anyone advice unless you've had the opportunity to try one out. Now while I'd admit it wasn't cheap, in terms of price/performance ratio, it all adds up for me.

If your case/PSU fits this, do consider it in your budget.

Glad to hear you're over the moon with it. It's a little out of my price range right now (can certainly afford it but choose not to spend that kind of money on a single component). Ther are certainly massive gains to be had by upgrading to it but from the reviews I've seen, the faster the CPU then the faster the gain. So if you have a low end CPU the benefit you get isn't as great as having a top end CPU.

What did you upgrade from?

With that resolution you won't be being limited by the CPU. With higher resolutions you will.

Eh!? Muddled there ;)

Up to 1600x1200, 4ghz Conroes bottleneck 8800s in some cases, anything under that and there is no CPU around that can not bottleneck a 8800.

8800s really come into it at 1600x1200 and above with 16xAA and 16xAF.

I was bottlenecked in BF2 at 1600x1200 with a 2.5 X2, went to 3.6GHz C2D and FPS went up by over 70%

I can play some games great at 1600*1200, but Oblivion and FEAR begin to show small signs of lag.

If I can't play all games at that res, I don't use it at all. Reason being I don't like to let my eyes get accustomed to it, cause then 1280*1024 doesn't look as good. Hopefully next year....

Thats the biggest myth regarding this series,

Using an overclocked upper-mid/high end cpu, to try and disprove a claim that a certain graphics card needs a high end cpu to get the best out of it, seems like flawed logic to me!

If you'd been using a 2.8GHz P4 or an Athlon 3200+ then I could have seen a cause for debate, but an overclocked 4800+ is too close to high end to use as an example against the original claim! :D

Right you are!! Believe it or not if you look around the boards and review sites, including this one, people with similar CPUs are actually being advised that an 8800 GTX is a waste of time (often by people who've never used an 8800).

I'm also trying to demonstrate that it's not a waste of time on lower resolutions.

Thats the myth I'm trying to dispell.
