8800 gtx overkill?

Im in the market for a new gpu, ive had my eye on the 8800gtx for awhile now. My question is do you think the 8800gtx is more than i need? my current monitor is a 19" LG Flatron wide 5ms 2000:1 dfc. Rez is 1440x900. Im quite upto date with the gpu market atm and whats happening next week, do you think the 8800gt would be a better choice as i wont be updating my monitor till sometime next year. my pc is used for gaming. Any advise appreciated

8800GTS is perfectly adequate of getting 60+ fps atleast 80% of the time in even the newest titles with settings maxed at 1440x900...

However I wouldn't say the GTX is overkill... personally I like a bit of margin both for future titles and to keep my fps high in worst case...

I had a GTS and at 144x900 I certainly did not get 60fps+ 80% of the time, 8800GTX aint overkill, if one can be had for cheap would not be a bad idea to get.

Yeh thats my dilema i would like to futureproof but i can't see there being a new gtx till next year, so it's no use spending £300 + now on old tech stuff, also threads are saying the 8800gt wont be far behind the current gtx, so do i go for gt or hope the current gtx drops quite a lot in value and go for one of them, also there maybe a new gts next month so that my be even better than the new gt.

New GTX should be this year aswell, but you can always wait for the new GTS which will be faster than the old GTX, the 8800GT is faster than the old GTS and almost as fast as the old GTX by the looks of the benchmarks from some japanese website with apparently good rep, so up to you really, a old GTX certainly would last you untill next year though

I think maybe i should wait and see reliable spec's and benchmarks next week, i dont want to regret buying a gt then next month they relese the gts and gtx im just gonna end up kicking myself for it, im gonna be upgrading to 22-24" monitor and an upgrade on my mobo early next year so i want to future proof for that.

I'll be running an 8800GT on a 22" monitor.
