8800 GTX & which PSU

Hi MagicThighs, Was going to send a privite message but it wont let me. Well I have to say I am well impressed with this card :D

All works fine with the 8800GTX in on my Tagan 480w. I have also got myself 1gig Dual Channal ram installed now (had 512 crap ram before)

So my current setup is:

ASrock ConRoe 945 MB
E6300 Core Duo
1gig Dual Channel Ram
Nvidia 8800GTX :D
2x400gig SATA
1xDVDRW & 1xCDRW

I have not tried to overclock the GFX card yet but I have got the cpu to 2.2MHz but the system was a little unstable, but I think that this might be due to the MB and not being able to up the voltage a little..

3DMark06 = 9040
3Dmark05 = 13438
3DMark03 = 30661
3DMark01 = 38779

Johnrs, that's great news. Enjoy your new toy.

I will be buying at the end of the month, and I will let you know how I get on.

Great 3d scores. I have heard that games are the 8800 real forte not benchmarks. How are you finding the games?

I bought a Thermaltake Toughpower 750w for my future 8800GTX :)

My current Antec 500w was stressed as it is...I have a lot of peripherals, lights, fans, etc.

Hi MagicThighs, As I have gone from AMD to Intel I had to reintsalled my system so have not put any games on yet.. I will however be loading FEAR tonight and have a play with that. Will let you know. I expected mroe from the benchmarking but have read its because the benmarking progs are not really made for that card yet. Cannot wait to see some DX10 Stuff :D

I dont have heaps of things in my case. Other that the hardware listed I have 2 case fans and thats it..

But I am VERY PLEASED with the card. Just need a good mobo now. Been looking at the EVGA 680i. But thats for another thread ;)

I had the Tagan 480W PSU like your own too. After getting the appropriate adaptors for the PCI-Express power connectors (since the TG480-U01 does not have any) it worked for me. Although with my 8800 GTX there was a whine when shutting down and a constant whine if starting up (without switching off at the mains first). Towards the end it was also showing artifacts too (both at the POST screen and during a simpsons episode).

In the end I went for a new PSU (an 800W Tagan Dual Engine) but that made absolutely no difference at all to the graphics card problem (which many people have been having - even with more powerful PSUs than the 480W). In fact the artifacts only really began to show after I had installed the new PSU to be honest.

At the end of the day if my 8800GTX behaved the same with both the 480W Tagan and the 800W Tagan I reckon the 480W model should be suffice (assuming you get adaptors for the power connectors). The other components of my PC are an Intel E6600, Asus P5W DH Deluxe, 2GB Corsair 4-4-4-12 DDR2-800 ram, Soundblaster Fatal1ty, 2x Seagate 320GB SATA2 (16mb buffer) hard drives, a digital TV tuner, two CD/DVD-RW drives and some fans. The older PSU coped quite fine with all that in there.

Though now that I have a new PSU I've decided to send the old one back to nanopoint.co.uk to get its ticking problem sorted (might as well seeing as it still has almost a year under warranty). The ticking problem was always present anyway from day one (a common problem with that particular PSU so I hear - to do with the active PFC or something).

its a bit out for me, reckons i need a 1092w psu for my system :eek:

Hmmm apparently mine would use 465W at stock speeds and 505W when overclocked to 3ghz.

Touch wood I have not had any problems.. Just had a quick play with FEAR and WOW. turned everything on and I am speechless

This confirms my initial post wayyy at the top stating that it could well be mobo dependant, but to be honest I think even a good quality 480w supply is pushing it (after all nvidia themselves recommend a 500w unit as minimum) its not leaving you much leeway imo

Sorry to be pedantic, but the recommended is 450W. More importantly its the combined 12v maximum wattage that determines if the supply is man enough. The minimum recommended is 28A/336W

EVGA
Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 28 Amp).

Well as yet I have not had any problems with my system using the 480w PSU.. all is running fine.. :D

I am looking at the EVGA 680i MB for next month as I know this ASRock MB is not that good and is letting my system down..

appologies Gibbo I believe stated nvidia recommending a 500w minimum on one of his first posts on release , by all means quote a board manufacturer but I did clearly state nvidia who "only " manufacture the gpu

It is after all possible the board manufacturer could reduce the psu requirement as they are more specific regarding particular rail requirements

Nvidia neglect to mention it in their specification or briefs. However it is on a fair few manufactures sites. It also written on the box in big letters. The reviews also say 450w and that comes from press packs. The TDP is 177w that's only 14.75A. In reality the card will not reach maximum design profile at stock. The PSU requirements are exaggerated because a lot of PSU manufacturers fudge the total wattage of their supplies for sales. As I said before the only value to be concerned with is the combined maximum 12V wattage. In this case its 28A to 30A, as I said before a 480w Tagan is borderline but capable.

The boards were designed by Asus

Asus
Minimum 450W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 30A)

BFG
A 450W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 30A or more*

EVGA
Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply.

Leadtek
A minimum recommended 450W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 30A).

Albatron
Minimum 450W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 30A)

Inno3D
Minimum 450W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 30A)

Palit
Minimum 450W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 30A)

It could be me, but I think there is a trend?
