Hi all,

Am thinking of getting a 8800 GTX soon and would like to know what PSU people would recommend. I currently have a Tagan 480 and assume that this is not going to be enough.

Thanks in advance for your suggestion
 
I personally think he is right not to even try with a 480w psu - to allow for further upgrades I would think a 600- 700w supply minimum

My U01 version of the Tagan 480w couldnt even power a single X1900 slave in certain configs (think it was mobo dependant) so I personally think its unlikely the next generation on would get anywhere.
 
This is my current setup

MB ASROCK
Core Duo CPU E6300
Crap memory (need some new DDR2 stuff)
2 x 400gig Sata
1xDVDRW & 1xCDRW
Nvidia 7900GTX
PSU Tagan 480

Seeing that the Nvidia 8800 GTX suggests a 500w min PSU and I only have a 480w I would need to upgrade my PSU to atleast a 500w
 
Wattage doesn't mean anything on its own, a £10 cheapo 500 Watt PSU will be completely different power wise to a £80 quality 500 Watt PSU. For graphics cards the most important is the available power on the +12v rail which your Tagan should have plenty of.

Meant if I dont have to buy a new PSU which would be about £80ish

I assume that I only have 1 12v rail.. Do you think that this will be ok to run a 8800 GTX?
 
It might be on the light side for overclocking the card and CPU, it's a solid PSU. But it does meets the minimum system power requirements specified by Nvidia of 28A. Try it, it won't hurt.

I had the same one and it started to droop 12v with an overclocked x1900xtx, which has a similar power requirement to the GTX.

why do you say that???

I have upgraded and got a 8800GTX and also 1 gig dual channel DDR2 Ram. I am also next month looking to get the new EVGA MB as well..

Tell me how you get on.

I have the same PSU and the thought of paying £100+ for another just seems crazy. However, if needs must :( . It maybe worth the money just for the peace of mind.

According to Guru3D the GTS should be fine, but with the GTX I think we are pushing it.
