ive read the whole of the 8800 overclocking thread and didnt really find what i was looking for. now go easy on me as i have never overclocked before and am going to try and overclock my 8800gts tonight. just few questons. firstly, are there any benefits/disadvantages to using rivatuner as opposed to ntune to do this. also, do you all start right from the beginning and clock the core for example in 5mhz increments and then test each time, or would i be ok to just jump straight to say say 600 for core and say 900 mem. im running an 8800gts, evga 680i, 2gb geil pc6400 and c2d 6600 at stock. all help very appreciated. thanks

I'd stick with going up 5MHz jumps given the value of your rig (best part of a grand, I'm thinking). If you used the coolbits hack, then don't let it autoclock on the 8800 as I heard that it causes crashes.

A good place to start you OCing would be that e6600 of yours, as it will do much more than the 2.4 GHz its currently on. You'll have to check the CPU section, but it should do 3 without you having to touch the vcore.

Back on the 8800 overclocking, I'd run 3d mark 06 between clocks to test it. If you had a cheaper card, then you might want to be a bit bolder, but no-one wants a £300 doorstop do they? ;)

guys, come on. little help please. dont get much free time so if want to oc it, i kind of need to tonight

I personally use Rivatuner, but it is up to you.

so could i actually damage the card by overclocking. i thought id have to actually increase the voltage to it to do that. if i just overclocked by too much, wouldnt it just be unstable

Overclocking the card results in more work being done by the card (as it is running faster). Consequently it generates more heat, which if not removed by the heat sink and fan will cause heat damage on the card.

Most cards run slower than maximum so they won't be damaged under any circumstances and so won't have to be returned to the manufacturer. So you can normally run them faster (overclock) as long as the temps don't get so hot that the card would be damaged. When you reach the maximum overclock, you'll get sparklies and artefacts.

I'd read the sticky at the top of this forum if I were you.

guys, as i have said, ive read the whole of that thread. questions ive asked here i didnt really find an answer to in that thread. what temp is ok for these cards. mines at 54 im in the middle of constantly running 3d mark as am oc'ing. am at 610/1080 so far

54°C is fine!

Mine runs at circa 76°C when im playing games

:D

Here is what I did:
- Install 8800GTS
- Install Rivatuner ( www.guru3d.com )
- Open driver settings
- Set speeds to 600/800, test, apply
- Run 3DMarks, games etc
- Set speeds to 650/900, test, apply
- Run 3DMarks, games etc
- Set speeds to 650/1000, test, apply
- Run 3DMarks, games etc

As soon as you see image corruption lower the overclock ....!!!!

Regarding the temps, my card idles at 60C and goes to 80C under load playing Oblivion, the fan stays <1700rpm though, there is a possiblity to manually set the fan higher with Rivatuner but I did not do that as the card is stable at 650/1000

ive got mine to 630/1190 stable. cant get the core any higher without it freezing in 3dmark. thing is though, in rivatuner i havent even got the option of going past 1190 as this is as far as the slider goes, same applies to ntune. is 1190 ok. wish i could get the core a little higher

when i clock the core to 650 with mem at 1190, i dont get any artefacts or sparklies when i try and run 3dmark, it just doesnt run, ie after loading up the first test, just get a black screen with nothing happening. why is this. a have at no point had any artefacts or sparklies

Do you know what your temps are? I'd say if you have pushed the core this far and you can't run 3d mark then back off on the core clock.

Also does you memory need to be that fast? Are you getting any better 3d mark scores at 600/1190 than 600/1000?

Sparkies and Artefacts indicate heat issues, but there is also voltage issues as running a card faster requires additional power. It could be a power issue that isn't allow this overclock.

fans at 60% so still got more cooling to go, but currently, at 630/1190, temp is 54 under load. so, if i wanted to get more out of the core, do i need to increase the voltage and how do i go about doing this. what is safe or do i just need to keep an eye on temps

looks like u need a volt mod i wouldnt do it as you can be losing a lot of money
theres a few threads of how to do a pencil mod etc

I'd think twice before pencil-volt-modding a new £300 graphics card. You might be able to get more off the core if you reduced the clock on the memory. TBH you've got a good clock off your card.

ok, well, how do i go about saving the changes so that everytime i reboot it doesnt reset to stock. keeps happening. do i just have to set it everytime

Rivatuner should save the settings as a registry entry, so it shouldn't need to be changed each time. Have a look at the screen shot above...

guys, i think i may have buggered my card. really stressing. basically, as mentioned, its clocked at 630/1150 which i thought was stable as no probs in 3dmark, but when playing games such as prey and quake on full settings, which i always do, im getting this strange thing happening. hard to explain, whenever i turn around or go up a slope or make any quick movement, theres almost a horizontal line going up the screen almost refreshing the picture, it is very noticeable. i have put my card back to stock but this is still happening. what the hells going on
