It because the 8800GTX and GTS offer top performance in current DirectX 9 titles.

They are far from worthless until Vista releases.

the reason why its released now is beause its still backwards compatible with DX9 so basically you will be able to use the 8800 cards to run all current DX9 games.

well it would be dense on nvidias part to release a card only compatible with a currently unreleased direct-X and non of the older versions, same with all cards, there all compatible with older versions really
