my 8800 arrived today and while it stonks along quite happilty, i cant help but wonder if the temps would be any better if i used AS5 instead of those white material like pads that come with the card.

has anyone attempted such surgery?

Not really going to answer your question, but these cards are fine hot. Your effort would probably be better served with a well placed fan.

Also, if you look at the LABEL of your card (so you can see the fan and all) near the end of the card that has the DVI cables, you will notice several slots in the facing where hot air is nudged out. Some people have taken to using cardboard or plastic to literally duct the hot air of the PCI expansion slot under their card.

AS5 would reduce the temps mate, I've done it to my last two cards (6800nu and 7800GTX). However, I only ever did it when I started to overclock them and after I'd had them for a few months and was comfortable that they had been "worn in". :)

But as of yet, my GTS is running at stock, so I don't really want to take it apart.... just yet. ;)

You can change the TIM to AS5 and use better thermal pads to improve a hot card. Thing is, I'd wait to wait to see if the card does run overly hot. They run quite hot anyway, a few of the hotter ones improve with new TIM. I've read of people making things worse so be careful. Don't change the pads for AS5, once the core makes contact, there is a gap to the memory chips that the pads make up.

thanks for that fornowagain.

i wasnt planning on it just yet but its always good to know for the future. ty kindly :)

Sometimes the pads make up for badly fitting heatsinks, ie they bridge a gap that would be there if you just had something like AS5. I've seen this a lot when fitting things like Arctic coolers to cards, usually the GPU gets good contact but the mem contact can be a lottery due to manufacturing deviance and flex in the board.

I noticed that, the instructions usually say apply the AS5 more heavily to the mem chips unlike the GPU to ensure it gets contact with the HS.
