Hi guys , Anyone done any experimenting tweaking the shader clock speed on an 8800 & if so was it worthwhile?. Got a bit board & decided to have a play modding the bios on my EVGA 8800GTS Superclocked & having never played with the shader clocks before was wondering whether to tweak it or leave it.
Currently got it quite happy at 650core 2000mem & shader up to 1500mhz from default 1400.

Anyone been there & broken anything by overdoing the shader clock ???

For the record I'm using Nibitor to mod the bios so can set individual clocks for core, memory & shader.

Ta:)

Flashed my card the other wknd with a modded bios, u can flash a backup bios with no display if u get a bad flash by blind typing nvflash -5 -6 backup.rom and spamming y a few times :)

Marshy is your card on water and whats your temps like ? may flash mine again with higher clocks :p

I asked this question in a different thread but never got answered.

From my small amount of research overclocking the core increases the shaders aswell, not sure at which ratio though.

It does show improvements in 3dmark scores etc, so I guess its worth doing.

EDIT

Am I right in thinking that all GTS cards have the same memory type/speed and core? I assume its the same across both 320mb and 640mb cards?

Currently got mine running happily at 600 core and 900 memory after 5 minutes of overclocking, seems stable, think I got to 640 core when I had problems in ATiTool. Is it worth pushing more on the memory or is it not worth it?

So when the bios flash went wrong, you typed nvflash -5 -6 backup.rom and it was all fixed? How you know when to type nvflash -5 -6 backup.rom?

I assume if its like other DOS based flash apps you just type this in to the command line and it does the rest, so even if you screw it up you can blind flash by just retyping the command in.

Ah so with the floppy disk or w/e in, you just wait for abit to be sure the cmd has loaded? or do you need ot press a key when you see the actual floppy led on?

Is it possible to use CD's? I would hate to have to go searching to find my FDD.

Yeah pretty much, from what I remember when I flashed my 9500 Pro years ago its just a case of booting up with the floppy, run the command, this runs the flash app, 15 seconds later it should be finished and back to prompt, then reboot.

Pretty sure you can make a CD from it, although its a bit of a waste for <1mb of data.

Not had a bad bios flash for a few years
Youve backed your old bios up on the disk with new bios and floppy is 1st boot device, so if u get a bad flash just leave floppy in drive, reboot, once the disc has stopped u know dos is loaded and u type blind nvflash -5 -6 and backup rom name :)

Will this work with a CD rewritable or DVD rewritable? as I wont be using a floppy as I have no floppy disks.

I'm going to have a proper play & do some benching over the weekend so i'll keep you informed of my findings, I've backed the core & mem down a tad as after a hour of C&C3 there was an odd flash here & there of a bad texture.

i'v clocked my shader to 1450 from 1300, only 100 marks extra on 3dmark06 and didnt notice any increase in fps in the games i play, but i'm thinking new maybe DX10 games will take advantage of it.

Oh i modded the original bios then flashed it

Try changing the paste on the card with some AS5 instead, should help keep the temp down and let you run the higher speeds. May as well if your fiddling with everything else. :D

Didn't make much difference if any when I tried and certainly not worth loosing your warranty.
