Well first of all its been a long time since ive been on these forums and no-one here probably remembers me in the slightest which is probably a good thing.

Anyway, just come home from work, decided to kick back and watch some dexter and plonk my lovely PC decides to reboot itself after hanging. Turned on my computer and it is only showing anything on one display. I have a lovely error message from windows 7 (evaluation copy: build 7100 ) telling me "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (code 43)". Now I used the power of google to find out what this meant it told me not much more than that and the possibility my graphics card has gone bye bye.

Just a bit about my set up:
GFX: Asus GeForce 8800 Ultra HTDP 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express),
Mobo: Asus P5K mobo
CPU: intel q6600 2.4ghz all running at normal speeds
RAM:GeIL Black Dragon PC2-8500C5 1066MHz 4x1gb.

So tried reseating the graphics card to no avail and of course reinstalling the drivers which it isnt to happy about telling me im trying to install 32 bit drivers (which believe me I am not).

Any help with potential solutions?

If not, someone please recommend me a graphics card, mainly play CoD 4: Modern Warfare on it and would like to be able to play CoD Modern Warfare 2 on it with all the frills.. Budget of £300, and I am a bit of an ASUS fan boy if that helps!

Cheers in advance xxx

Gonna agree with rounddodger here - get yourself a 260 now and wait for the availability of the 58xx series to become better. Plus there's probably going to be a nice cut around christmas if fermi makes it in time.

As you already have an NV card and if you have no issues with drivers/CP etc then I still say the 260, performance-wise there is bugger all to seperate the 260/4870. I made a similar move from a 8800 Ultra to a 280 and had zero issues. Expect a 50% ish boost over the ultra.

I think you should try another card that you know works to make sure it's the gfx that is dead. Just in-case it's something wrong with the PSU/Mobo/Mojo make sure you use an expendable second card incase it gets fried too.

I would double check that it really is dead... I had windows 7 RC top itself blaming hardware problems - but the hardware is fine and runs XP still no problem.

Well you said your a Call Of Duty fan mate, so am I. Now, if your the person who plays the 1 player version as others suggest get a 260 or better depending on how frisky your feeling. Now if your a hardcore Cod fan who plays wars/scrims/pcw/cb/esl etc. Then im guessing your wanting 250 fps constant online, and thats including MW2 also, so you will have to buy a good card. Your budget is £300 mate, pap on a 5870 in my opinion or 5850 and crossfire them on January or something.

My 8800 died also, and just like you i mostly play call of duty mate (online cups leagues etc.) So i went with a 5870, or rather i will be getting a 5870 if this ****ty Qleadtek company doesnt hurry up with my RMA. Good luck :)

5870's only card to get with that budget.

Where was the kaboom, i came in here expecting bangs, sparks and flames, not just a windows error message, what a let down :(

Could you RMA it if necessary?

Asus provide 3 years warranty as standard now, but not sure if that was the case when you bought this card.

It ressurected itself for about 5 minutes and i almost jumped with joy... Is this likely to be a problem with my version of windows 7? Should i go and buy the released version of windows 7 first and see where i end up with that rather than forking out the money on a new graphics card? Am I likely to see that many results?

this tbh, probably a corrupt file

Have you got XP os to try just to make sure?
I would wait till the 275GTX+Physx comes out or benchies before you buy.
