8800 - what one? GT/GTS/GTX

Well i'm in a dilemma.

I want a next gen card. I've read that the Zoltac 8800GT 512 AMP is the best 8800GT (it has the 75mm fan), there's the new 8800GTS 512 cards (not sure on a brand though), and then there are the GTXs.

What should i go for?

I want power (to play Crysis high settings for example) on a 22inch Samsung Widescreen monitor, and value.

Is the statement GT<GTS<GTX<ULTRA really noticeable? I.e. if i get a GT is it really really slower than a GTS?

I have around 300 max to spend but that's at a real stretch.
Should i wait for the 9800s?

Thanks guys and sorry for the questions!

8800GT does this easily at that resolution but it'll die if you turn AA on, you need a GTX for that.

So the question to ask yourself is whether or not you want antialiasing in Crysis.

cheers for the reply.

My monitors max res is: 1680x1050
Not sure if that means i can run games higher?

I have WinXP Home with 3GB of PC400 Memory, ASUS SLI Deluxe, and AMD Dual-core 64 4200.

Ideally i'd like to run games as smoothly as possible at the highest res posisble. :)

get the AMP for sub £200, stick £100 in a savings account... come the 9800 launch whenever it happens, sell the GT, then add the money yuo get to the £100 in your account and put it towards a 9800

wash, rinse, repeat

Ok, :)

Does it improve a lot with AA?
It's a matter of taste TBH. Crysis uses a type of AA that I, for one, think looks horrendous.

Bingo. ;)

Aagh that type of AA :D
The very same, all developers are using it now. :(

Ingame I have no FSAA enabled on my 8800GT but EdgeAA is enabled, can you spot any obtuse jaggies in my screens?

No!
I see your challenge and raise you a "yes it looks hideous, here's an example: -"

Sorry bud, but I just can't stand this crap form of antialiasing devs are now using. I can't even really call it antialiasing with a straight face, that's how much of a joke I really think it is.

The difference between the 8800GT and GTS is the ability to run them at the same FPS but with the GTS on 'High' shaders and shadows.
The GT can do all high, that's what I play in. If I turn on "antialiasing" though it just runs out of VRAM.

Even with a GTX you can't run Crysis on High well (with aa), the time demo is so NOT a good idea of how the proper game runs!
Depends on your definition of "running well."

If you mean 60fps then no, nothing will. If you mean mid-20's and high-30's then it's fair, which I can just about tolerate in Crysis as it's such a good game. A GT will do that without AA, a GTX will do it with AA. :)

pfft ingame you don't notice the bark jaggies like you do in the screenies.
