had my GT since release now no problems at all, brilliant card, but lately the fan on it had been having a hissy fit, the fan will speed up, then slow down, speed up, then slow down, even happens when im not playing a game, anyone noticed this happening ? or know why its happening ?.

thanks

I haven't noticed it on mine, which brand/model do you have? I have been considering updating the firmware on mine which is meant to adjust the fan speed depending on the termperature but I dont know if thats in 2D mode or not.

Could it be full of dust etc.?

Although they don`t work perfectly, the fan does adjust to temps. Use Nvidia monitor or something similar and see if the speed increase is related to temperature. If so, it could be chock full of dust, or the thermal sensor could have gone.

You could also try and set a fixed higher fan speed, say 50%, and see if the fan still does it.

:)

nah i have the side of my computer off lol, its very distinct it goes from 45% to id say 90% about 5 times in the space of 10 seconds, goes pretty mad, i just updated firmware on it so could be that, but not sure why the firmware would be making it do that, not sure its supposed to ?

its EVGA superclocked

get one of those you will be so glad you did, not only will you have a near silent 8800gt but you will have better overclocking headroom.
I have a 120mm 800 rpm fan cable tied to mine I cannot hear it and my load temps are 40-45c and it made my max overclock higher.
Had mine on the gt since I got it last year no need for vrm heatsinks or 3rd party ramsinks what comes with it is fine.

Sell that and get the s1 ? not sure that's compatible with a gt.
S1 is well worth getting if you plan on keeping your card for a good while yet.
Having said that you could use rivatuner and set up your own fan profile.

yer i do that anyway, when it starts playing up i go into rivatuner and set it at 60% and then it stops.
