I've been offered a Gigabyte 8800GT Turbo edition with the onscreen volt mod thingy for £80 as a mate bought a new Radeon 4850 online today. Would this card be any better than the 8800GS 384 meg I currently have and is it worth the £80?

Well, I would say its worth it if you can sell your 8800GS for atleast £60, which shouldn't be a problem really.

if its anything like the 8800gt i have then its deffo worth the deal. the gigabyte card uses 3 phase power and solid capacitors all round so its a very reliable card that should last you a long time. it also comes with a decent stock cooler a zalman vf800 or something which is much better than the single slot reference coolers.

and the main thing about the gigabyte card is that its a fair bit shorter than reference 8800gt cards so it can easily go inot more cramped cases.

here is a pic of my gigabyte 8800gt with a hr-03 cooler on it:

I have always been a bit of a coward when it comes to using a 3rd party GPU cooler. I take it that cooler wont fit if you have a card in your second PCI-E x16 slot?

yep it does take up 4 slots, if i had used an accelero s1 with a 12cm fan insted than it would have taken up 3 slots i believe as the HR-03 is taller so it takes up 1 more slot.
i had the HR-03 as a spare cooler lying around thats why i slapped it onto the 8800gt otherwise i would have kept the stock cooler which kept load temps under 65c anyways.

here are a couple more pics of the card. and as you can see it compared next to my 8600gt the gigabyte 8800gt is not much longer than the 8600gt at all since its not a reference 8800gt design.

Cool. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I bought the first 8800GT I could which was the BFG OC one, however with the bios update I now see a max of 76c which aint too bad, especially since the card is pretty much silent too :)
