8800GT Problem, 3dmark06 rebooting / freezing

Hi folks!

So I got myself an XFX 8800GT 'XXX' Edition;

Clock speeds 675 Core / 1.95mhz Mem

I installed it today, and basically it's fine in windows, I installed the Nvidia drivers from the website, for XP 32-Bit (169.21)

When I run 3dmark06, it either reboots or freezes, usually towards the end of the 1st benchmark, or the 2nd benchmark (the firefly part).

I have tried the following after some googling;

1) Used Rivatuner to increase fan to 100%
2) Used Rivatuner to DE-CLOCK the speeds to that of standard (625/1.8)
3) Tried the above with 100% fan speed also

It all results in 3dmark06 still rebooting or freezing.

Temp in XP is 52 degrees on idle.

I did the Nvidia stress test and it works fine, the temp goes up to 55 degrees.

I then called my friend, who ordered the same card at the same time, and he has successfully ran 3dmark06 with no issues, he is using the same drivers etc.

So not sure whats going on?

I am about to go and try a different set of drivers (like a beta version or something) and see if that makes any difference.

Any ideas? The card may be borked, but seems strange it can't run at standard speeds either?

Hi mate,

Thought you mighta been on to something there...

I downloaded the latest DirectX drivers, even though I did have them already, so thought i'd re-install them.

Then ran 3dmark06, it then got to the bit where the dragon jumps over the airship that sorta time, and it just froze on that screen.

Not played any games yet.

:(

Try reducing the memory and core clocks even further... it could be a bad card. :(

Get some games to test too. Run Core Temp and see what your CPU maxes out & idles at, it might not be seated properly.

What is your Power Supply (Amps on each voltage rail)?

My friend has a Tagan 750W.

I have a Thermaltake toughpower 700W (or it might be the 750W one) but im sure either of those should be good enough? It's not exactly running SLi or anything.

Im gonna now underclock the card more and i'll report back my findings...

Right;

I underclocked it massively, increased fan speed, and left it going.

Came back 10 mins to a BSOD

Avg7rsxp.sys

So that is my AVG, and my friend has AVG installed also but does not run it from startup.

So I ended all AVG tasks completely etc.

Tried again;

Same problem, froze when the hot air balloon thing goes into the sunset on 3Dmark06.

Really getting on my nerves now tbh, im gonna RMA the card I think.

Before you RMA the card, check out the rest of your PC.
At the very least run memtest86
If that passes run orthos.

Whats the 2 extra power plugs?

All I did was plug the PCI-Express power cable into the 6 pin connector on the card.

There was no other power sockets?

PC is fine, memory etc fine :(

OK Update...

I was using an older version of 3dmark06...

I downloaded the latest one which has the 'october hotfix' installed on it.

Lo and behold, the 3dmark06 ran ok...

However, a minute later there I was just checking out what the hotfix fixed, and went to check my temp levels in the nvidia control panel.

The lats thing I saw was 54 degrees.

Before my comp BSOD with a;

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

error?!

Is that video RAM error do you think, thus still being a borked card?

Im gonna re-do another 3dmark06

EDIT - Did another 3dmark06, froze again during it, so must have been a fluke the first run.

Typical, time for RMA methinks...

Any chance if trying your mates card? If the same happens, it's something else in your system, if not. most likely your card's deffo borked.

I just put my old X1950 Pro back in.

Ran 3dmark06 with no issues whatsoever.

It's got to be the card, I cant be bothered to go round his to get his card it's all too much effort for a problem that seems to be apparant on these pre-oc cards :(
By time I manage to borrow his card, it will be the weekend, by then i'd rather have sent this back. :(
