8800GT Problem - Last Attempt

Hey,

I got a BFG 512MB 8800GT OC on the 31st October ( Halloween.. Ironic )

As i wasn't aware how to input the card back then, i got my mate who works for Nvidia ( online mate ) to put it in for me at a LAN event in November
(12th).

First, the card wouldn't work with my ASUS M2N Mainboard, giving video error beeps, so i bought a new MSI K9 Mainboard from the LAN.

My card went in and worked fantastic, using the drivers released on 31st Oct.

Anyway, when i got home, i played for a night, then turned off the pc. Re-booted in the morning to find the fan spinning at 100%, but no signal to the monitor. It did the 100% spin on boot, but it usually 'catches' and then slows down if you like, not this time though.

Anyway, i re-seated, re-connected and still nothing, kept doing it and finally it worked.

This keeps happening, once every few days or so, or maybe it's fine for a week, then happens again.

I have no idea why, and no idea how i'm fixing it, it's a monopoly and thats whats annoying me.

It isn't heat as i use rivatuner to set fan to 45% at start up, and use 75% manually when playing games. The temp NEVER rises above about 57 degrees C.

Also, i thought the weight of the card might mean it's sliding out, that has also been elminated as i've had my computer lying on it's side for two weeks.

My PSU has 2 x 18A 12V Rails, i have tried PCI-E 1 and 2 Connectors, thinking it might be a faulty cable

Any help is much appreciated as i'd rather not RMA.

SPEC:

XP Home
AMD X2 5000+ Black Edition 2.6Ghz
2GB ( 2 X 1GB GeiL 800Mhz )
BFG OC 512MB 8800GT
OCZ StealthXStream 600W PSU ( 2 x 12V 18A )
160GB SATA HDD
MSI K9 Board
Zalman CPS9000 Cooler

Temps : CPU 26
System 27

Thanks

When it stops working, can you see if there are any contacts showing (as in the gold bits which are meant to be inside the PCI-E slot?)

do you still have your previous gfx card? does your system run fine with this?

could be the mobo, ive had enough dodgy msi boards to never touch em again! thats only my opinion tho.

I doubt it's the motherboard, could be i guess. And no, i can't see any of the gold bits :p

Strange problem though :o

Any evidence to support that statement mate?

I'm not being cocky, it's just i've scoured for people experiencing the same problems, to no avail. I'm aware of people who are experiencing complications getting it to boot, but none who have had it working only to experience frequent deaths of the card

the bug thats different.

Mine has not once frozen while in use.

It wont boot sometimes after being off for a certain amount of time.

The only time i get the 100% fan speed thing your describing is if i overclock and its not stable.

Try a cmos reset

Describe what that is mate and how to do it?

If you mean taking the battery out of the MoBo and re-inserting after half an hour or so, i've done it.

And the 100% thing, when i boot my pc, the card goes v.loud for approx 3 seconds, then slows to regular speed. Many other people have reported the same process.

It never goes to 100% in windows or games, as i have rivatuner profiles for that :)

To sum up the problem again. Sometimes when i boot my pc, the card just spins loud, and no monitor response is recieved.

It's a card problem, not monitor as the fan speed should not be 100% constant on boot.

Yea thats it mate taking the battery out, but if you have already tried it with no joy its prob best to rma it or get someone else to try it in there machine.

Edit: have you checked for a bios update for the motherboard?

EVGA released a bios other day, flashes from Windows after Nvidia drivers are uninstalled) but you really need a back up of original bios for RMA puropses.

Somone did post on how to make a ISO other day to flash with Nvflash.
