8800GT replacement for HTPC use

If it's just a HTPC, then even a 6450 would do the job; but if you want to do some gaming on the side, then may be spend more for either a 7750 or 6850.

Do you NEED to stick with Nvidia? Both the 630 and 640 are slower than your 8800GT, and GTS450 is only a little bit faster. Any reason why you need to replace you 8800GT? Has it start to have problems?

Yes, it is about 5 years old now and I really need a new graphics card with HDMI audio output to my TV. ;)

Any recommendations on the ATI side? Thank you :D

I already posted in my post :p

6850 is faster than the 7750, but would require 1 PCI-E 6pin additional powerl wereas the 7750 is a bit faster than the GTS450, but only consume around 44W at peak and is bus-powered.

However I wouldn't buy the 6850 at current price £100 though...probably best wait for it to be on sales at just little bit over £80 again.

It's around same speed as 7750, but has higher power consumption and require a 6pin PCI-E power. £50 is 2nd hand right? Personally I would pay the £25 extra for the 7750 just for the sake of 2 years warranty and lower power consumption (lower temp+lower noise).

Yes 2nd hand and thank you for the advice. ;)

I really don't have much experience with ATI cards.

I'm going to go for the 6770 for £50 :)
Not a bad choice if you want to save the money, but what brand/model is that 6770? Cause different brand could have different coolers and each are different noise level. But generally speaking most custom coolers would be quieter than the reference cooler.

Also, you may be able to find a 2nd hand GTX460 1GB or 6850 for £60 2nd hand (both are shoulder to shoulder to each other on performance, however the GTX460 1GB would need two PCI-E 6 pin).

Is it true the fans are at 100% and are very loud?
I don't actually own that specific card, so I can't really comment. So far I only seen ONE topic enquiring about if there's a way to adjust the fanspeed for those fans on that cooler, and it seem to be non-adjustable. But noise level is a pretty subjective thing...and it's also depends on how far away is your HTPC from where you sit...the chances are you wouldn't even hear the fans when watching a movie, but possibly audible during quiet moment in a movie may be.
