8800GT upgrade - 5770 advice?

Having upgraded to a 22" monitor it's about time to upgrade the ageing 8800GT I think. Seeing as there's no mid-range nVidia cards anywhere to be found, looks like it'll be back to ATi again!

I very much like the look of the 5770 CuCore on this week only:

Trouble is I cant seem to find any reviews of it with mention to the audio levels, which is a pretty important factor for me. My 8800GT has a Accelero S1 on fully passively, and it never gets above 56 degrees.
The Accelero *can* fit this card, with a small amount of butchering of the cooler - not sure if I want to do that yet.

Does anyone know how noisy this card is, or of any reviews which go into detail on the noise level? Ta!

I had to sell my 8800GTX and make do with a 7800GT... then i went Asus cucore 5770.. great card. Its a bit noisier than the 7800GT but only when its running full out. Its well worth buying i reckon, and you could allways fit a zalman or something if its too bad for you. Me i can live with it as you cant hear the fan above the games sound anyway.

I tried looking for video reviews on youtube, to see if there were any sound and vision reviews, not to much turns up, so don't bother.

If it helps, it 'looks' like a quiet cooler.

You might be able to fit the accelero on without having to mod it. I know on reference boards the 5770 chip is placed really close to the PCI slot cover so the accelero would overhang but from pictures of the cucore the chip seems to be placed at the opposite end of the board.

Have you looked at the Sapphire Vapor-X? It's £12 more expensive but there is a lot of reviews for it and nearly all confirm that it is very quiet.

I just bought the new Sapphire 5770. Its not the one listed in the picture on the OCuk website. Its newer and slightly shorter. Standard 5770 but whisper quiet indeed. So infact i have got another on the way for corssfire. :)

Is that a 1680x or 1920x 22" panel? the 8800GT is still very capable at 1680x even in the latest games, its only at 1920x that it really falls down.

If you don't mind temps somewhat on the high side ATI cards seem to be happy enough running with the fan slowed down and are pretty quiet when run like this - I've not heard anyone complaining of premature failure when used like this.

Ta for the replies, it is a 1680x1050 screen - the 8800GT isnt too bad on most things, just I've had it for ages now and the upgrade bug is itching. According to the reviews I've read the 5770 gets around 18-35% better performance then a 9800GT, depending on the game.

The Vapor-X does look a beefy cooler - but it'd make more sense just to get the Club 3D card, and stick an aftermarket Zalman or similar cooler on it, if I was going to spend that much.

In a lot of games I'd have thought you'd see even more gains than that - granted the 8800GT is still a very good card, but the 5770 is almost as fast as the GTX260 which in turn is almost as fast as 2x 8800GT in SLI.

Its actually the 5750 that's almost as fast as the GTX260 now. The 5770 card has a decent lead in most games.

A passive 5750 might be worth considering.

5750 is suprisingly fast for what it is... but if you look at any reliable benchmarks overall if the 5770 is 100% then:

GTX260: 113%
5770: 100%
5750: 90%

Theres a few games where the 5770 is faster, quite a lot where it matches the GTX260 and quite a few where its marginally slower - these are based off anandtech's latest set of data too which I generally consider reliable.

EDIT: If we put the 8800GT into this it comes in at 67% - which gives you a fair idea how much faster the 5770 is, the 5750 results are a little deceptive as its does very well in some games almost matching the 5770 but drags a bit more in other games - really I'd have put it at more like 75% or so.

I have two cards and dont hear them @ all when gaming or when on auto
fan speed when am browsing the interweb

go buy excellent cards;)

Only true if your comparing 195/196 drivers - not if you compare 197.13, 197.25 beta or 191.xx against 10.3 cats.

Hey. I have a 4870 which is about the same performance as the 5770, tho the 5770 has the advantage given its clocking ability. Im gettin an 8800gt of a mate today for a build im doing for sum guy. So if u like i can do sum benches for u to compair the them.

5750 seems a good card, but its priced almost exactly the same as the 5770 bizzarely, so I'd go for the 5770 just on whatever little extra it gives.

Looking at that techpowerup review, my lowly 8800GT gets 13.5FPS :( - whereas a 5770 pulls 22FPS, almost double! (at my res, albeit with 4x AA which I wouldnt be using)

Lokken - Thanks, but there's plenty benchmarks around using identical kit, the card is *obviously* faster than what I have, im mainly hoping to keep my little rig quiet as possible, the CuCore equipped card is exactly £15 more than the cheapest 5770 offering.

But I'd rather use the £15 on a 3rd party cooler, if theirs is still noisy. I'll see if I can find any other reviews, plenty time before the weekend special runs out...
