Hi guys,

I have recently brought a Samsung 226BW and i'm currently stuck on a low res because the 8800GT struggles at the monitors native res.

I don't really want to spend allot, however, i'm going to be watercooling very soon and would preferably like a card that i can get good gains and a massive improvement on my 8800GT.

Also, can anyone tell me how i can bench my 8800GT in COD4? I currently run it at 1024 X 678 on low settings which gives me sustained 125FPS.

Only cards that are going to be a massive improvement over your GT are the GTX280 or 4870/4870X2 - anything else is only going to be marginally faster at 1600x.

To get a 'massive improvement' over a 8800GT you'll need at least a Radeon 4870.
I would have thought in low settings with 0xAA/1xAF that when overclocked a 8800GT should be able to provide a framerate around the monitor refresh rate most of the time at 1680x1050 though.

Mate, if my 8800GT handles COD4 at 1680*1050 with max details and 4xAA at a constant 30fps+ then there's no reason why yours shouldn't...?

Why on earth you would want such a low resolution and 125fps on an LCD i'll never know, that's just silly. LCD monitors work differently to CRT's, put vsynch on and just make sure your fps stays above 35 minimum. I average 50 or so with my rig.

COD4 is based on the quake3 engine - as such 125fps is an advantagous framerate to have.

My 8800GT does 1920x1200 with max settings 4x FSAA, 16x AF and never drops under 40fps - tho I tend to play with slightly lower settings and such to keep the framerate high - for multiplayer ideally you want around 100fps constant.

LOL, perhaps thats my problem, i always thought no matter what you need atleast 60 constant? Sounds like 4870 is the one though.

Thats what i thought  I choose 125 as it is one of the magic numbers that give you an advantage during online play - hence the low res.

Basically, i want to be able to maintain that advantage whilst also playing at a higher res.

sorry why run it at such low settings, when u get those fps?... aslong as you dont get below at about 30 you're at no real disadvantage.. people cant really see above 70fps...

For online gaming anything under 60fps is going to be less than ideal, and even with the 60Hz operation limitation of a TFT 100fps still feels more fluid and responsive unless you enable vsync - which will make things smoother but slightly less responsive.

And while 35-40+fps is fine for singleplayer - trust me if you play COD4 to a high level even 60fps is a limitation.

My thoughts exactly, although thats what i thought before the comments above.

Can someone advise a suitable card so that i can get sustained 80-100 FPS at 1600X1200.

i think the only reason i'd run low graphics is to take advantage of poor draw distance with grass etc.. aka ghillie suits wouldnt work... i'd only find fps a problem below 30 because sniping can get jumpy...

well up untill about a month ago gt's were considered rather good for mid res monitors... admitadly nothing special.. but is anythign special for longer than a month in this business?

Well, there appears to be 2 schools of thought here.

1 - > 30FPS is fine for COD4
2 - < 60-80FPS is fine for COD4

Personally, i would have chosen number 2. Granted, the human eye can only decern < 70FPS but personally, i've always felt that when i'm getting constant 80+ FPS it simply feels smoother.

Would the 4870 allow me to get that sort of FPS at low detail?

The 4870 is faster than the GTX 280 in CoD4. I don't know exactly how fast it will run on your system though.

I don't know if it'll get you what you need but look at the 8800GTX FPS compared to the GTX280 and 4850/70 cards. I'm sure the 8800GTX would have more grunt than your GT at 1600x1200 with AA applied.
