8800gt vs 4890

I'm trying to find a review comparing these cards - anyone know where to find one.
The xfx 4890 is up for £164.99 atm and i'm very tempted but want to confirm a good increase over the 8800gt i've got now. (gaming at 1650 x 1080).

The difference would probably be in the region of 50-60% faster

Hmm looking at those charts the increase is 60 - 105% improvement.

Also the 4890 clock really well so would probable get you to 100% in a lot of games.

Tbh I can't see why the 60 - 105% improvement why you wouldn't notice the upgrade.

going from 30fps to over 50fps in most games is very noticable. You would even be able to switch on lots more eye candy and still run at better rates than you old 8800 GT.

Also take into account that the GTs are limited to 512mb even in SLi.

If you really want a major boost, consider the 4890 Atomic/Black Edition. They're a little over £200 but will come with 1Ghz core as stock... which basically makes them faster than a GTX285 at stock, they're pretty pricey though, like all guaranteed overclock ones (but the atomic does come with 1Ghz/1040(4160) and a quieter, better cooler on top so some value there!). Depends on your cash allowance
Theres the 4870X2 for £250 atm too, which is basically 2 x 1gb 4870s bolted together, faster than your 8800GT by about 40-70% as standard 1 card model, but much faster in crossfire compatible games where both GPUs come into play (which apparently from people who own them is a majority these days).

I didnt know SLi 8800 GT still held up pretty well to be honest, i guess you get used to what you have after so many months/year+ and then want better. 4890 is indeed good for a single card, but myself i think ill wait for the new ones

I'm stuck with a budget of about £150.00 so the 4890 @ £164 fits about right. ive always liked the sound of sli or x2 but still read about problems though recently these seem fewer and fewer. i think my next motherboard will definately be crossfire/sli compatible though.

No worries, for about £150 then a 4890 or GTX275 is gonna be the best to go for atm, see what the best deal you can find on one is

At low resolutions yeah, at high res it begins to struggle a lot more heavily though due to limitations in the memory bandwidth etc. Once you hit 1920x1080 or higher you're much better off looking at the newer cards, as they aren't let down in the same way, and aren't held back.
