Would I see a dramatic improvement in performance if I upgraded my current graphics card to either a 4870 or a 280GTX? I play at 1680x1050 resolution.

You'd certainly see a decent jump in performance, but to be honest it's still probably not 'worth' it. Your card should still be running everything pretty well.

If it was my money, i'd be (and am!) holding off until the point where i'd have to drop Resolution to play something. I think i'll get almost another year out of my card (8800 GTX) before that happens - at which point there will be an even shinier generation to get.
Then again, i'm a student atm, so my perspective on money might be different.

I run an 8800GT which overclocks nicely, not feeling the need to upgrade. I'm going to wait until the DX11 cards come out. By then Windows 7 should be out, which has it by default.

I guess its best just to stay with what I have for now as it seems to run most games without issues.

My 8800GT still pretty much maxes most the games I play. I've got no need to upgrade as I don't think I'll see anything to challenge it enough just yet

i'd stay as you are for now, my setup runs everything fine on my 24" screen and your 8800gt is faster.

Ive gone from the 8800 GT(sold for £75) to a Saphire 4870 1MB (available for £169.99) and it has made a hell of a difference for me @ 1600x1200 with aa on!

Oh and the fan is a lot quieter also!

i play at 1920x1080 with a bit of AA, perfectly in TF2 and Company of Heroes

Crysis won't play well at this res, but tbh, the above two games are all i'm playing at the moment, so no point in upgrading my 8800gt

Thanks guys you helped me decide to actually keep my GT and oc it a bit and actually upgrade my 19" for a 22" and a res bump(1440x currently ).

I mostly play MMO's and while I like decent settings to make things look pretty good Im not worried about maxing everything. I only had money for a either or upgrade so Ill do the monitor and see how it goes and sell my 19" and put that cash back for maybe a good card on sale this year,

Ran a single 8800GT 512 for a while and then picked up a second and put them in SLI. BIG improvement for very little dosh (£70). Worth a thought untill the DX11s come out
