Is it possible to overclock the asus version of this card - and by how uch and using what program (i.e easy overclocking )

thanks (im referring to the asus 8800 gts 512mb version by the way)

^ as above, rivatuner is a great tool and easy overlcocking for this card and ATI tool to check for artifacts, don't forget games also. One thing to remember is that the memory on these doesn't like much change so with mine it may as well be left at stock.

The top stable clock with my card is: 750(core)/2000(mem)/1800(shader)

Get clocking! :)

and what type of performance increase does that give you in crysis or games in general?

does the fan run a lot quicker when u overclock (does it get louder)

i'm tempted to test it out

Soz ive posted this in another thread but it may be useful here too:

I have an EVGA 8800 GTS 512 OC to 775/2000/2100 within rivatuner. Have configured rivatuners automatic fan speeds and it never goes higher than 65 degrees at most on load (fan at 70%).

Averages at 60 degrees with 60% fan on load.
get rivatuner 2.08 and read how to set this up under Advanced Automatic Fan Control section here http://www.vaguesoft.com/index.php?pageid=rt207#fan

got an increase of 500 3DMarks over stock.

Seems the max some ppl have OC these cards on air is 800/2000/2200 but my pc BSOD's at this OC.

Hope this helps

Its essential that you change the fans stock speeds as they only really kick in when the card gets to 80 degrees (me thinks). Riva Tuner is very good for setting up fan profiles that change speeds depending on temps. Do a search for the helpful RivaTuner step by step setup guide.

I only got my card last night so I have not had much time to play around with it but my temps do seem very low. I have not played around with the clocks much, I just raised the core to 720 (shaders are on linked so I can't remember the value) and memory at around about 1100. The idle temps are 44 and at load they have not exceeded 55 which does appear to be low. However I do have loads of high speed fans in my case which may explain the temps (sounds like a vacuum cleaner) and the profiles in RivaTuner use high fan speed settings. I have not had a long gaming session yet as I was just playing around with the settings. Either the temps are not being reported correctly or I may have hit jackpot with this card.

So far I'm very pleased with the GTS as my GT 512MB it replaced was an awful overclocker and not always that stable at stock speeds due to what I suspect was dodgy memory. I will be pushing my GTS further and hopefully this time I've got a good one.

Not all GTS hit 2000 on the shaders and many bomb out at 1900 or below.

My GTS can hit 850 on core but only 1890 odd on shaders. If I drop the core to 830 I can get 1944 on shaders stable.

Whats more important for new games; core clock or shaders?

General consensus seems to be higher shader clock gives the biggest gains in framerates.

Probably more so once Nvidia release physics drivers for the cards (see other thread).

I can't be bothered running test after test seeing which benefits most in which games as it will probably vary between games anyway.

I settled for the higher shader overclock over the core as 850 was probably pushing my card to the limits on core speed.

You'll actually find that the ASUS 8800GTS 512 is probably the best out of all the GTS's for overclocking (also might be why ocUK dont stock them anymore). I can get mine to 800/2000/2200 perfectly stable, but it begins to reach upwards of 60c idle, and 85-90c load, so I slow it down a little.
It all depends on your system tempreature. Rivatuner is the best program to use for overclocking.

Is that with stock fan speeds?

mine runs at 2100 shader but it gets really hot and starts artifacting after a while in game, memory absolutely will not go above 2Ghz, not even 1Mhz above for some reason, core does 850 on air as well, but same problem as before, its stable for about 15 minutes then seems to get too hot, with waterblock i reckon it would be 100% stable at 850/2100/2000 but i haven't got a waterblock for it yet, fan becomes noticable audible over 50% for me, proberbly cause everything else is watercooled
