8800GTS disappointing performance

mrk said:
You don't need to run the resolution down on any 8800gts, argh!

yeah, i dont understand this running it down business, a lot of reviews/benchmarks show it at around 40-50fps+ on most games in mid-high settings on a resolution of 1920x1200.

infact, it's only above this where the major differences between the 640mb and 320mb versions become apparent

Everywhere i've read people are saying that the 320 version if for people with low (read 19") res monitors. I got one and really wish I had plumped for the more expensive version. I play at 1280x1024 and the recent World at conflict demo constantly flagged up vram overflow messages as I was playing. Sure, it plays all current games wonderfully but I was really hoping for £200+ to be able to play the next gen of games maxed out as well :0\

UPDATE UPDATE  Well I tried the card in Vista and guess what........... the same as in xp :( :( .
But on a brighter note re-installing the codecs sorted out the avi issue. Cup half full and all that ;) So any more ideas guys

Have you played any other games? there may be game issues with certain cards..

I'm a little underwhelmed by my GTS performance too. It has become far more evident at resolutions of 1600x1200 and above (1920 native) which I guess is to be expected to some degree. Would it be worth getting an 8800 Ultra for the latest games if I want to play at 1920 resolution with AA/AF on and other pretty things enabled.....or should I wait for the 8900/9x cards, whichever is next?

Tried LOMAC and the aircraft have a white line along their edges and are not as clear as with 7950 card, maybe might have to re-install the sims but withe amount of add ons could take a while. :(

offs, just buy something, if we tell you to wait, you'll probably just buy it, and in the off chance you do wait you'll then post again asking if you should wait for the next and better one.

i come to the conclussion most people underwhelmed with these cards are underwhelmed purely because they expected much more from them, i mean, for gods sake, they are hardly that much of a step up from the current DX9 cards but they were never going to be the best thing since sliced bread, but, when all said and done, they are a good improvment, as would going from an x1800xt to an x1950xt, not a 9800pro to a x1950xt like most people seem to have thought

No actually, I've had the GTS since it came out and until I upgraded everything else it did wonders for me at the resolutions I played at. Now I have changed from CRT to TFT my needs have changed and all I'm wondering is whether the gap between this and the next line of cards would be significant enough to warrant a probable expensive purchase, considering that UT3, Crysis and Bioshock aren't released yet.

8800 Ultra benchmarks do not really impress me for the performance/price ratio - I just want a card that can make more than a half arsed attempt to render these games smoothly at this resolution.

Thanks for the rant though  nevermind.

well, they render games better than those that were £200 6 months ago...

edit: the rant wasn't aimed at you, i needed to put more of a space betwwen the stuff intended for you, and that for others :)

;) :p hope you're not aiming at me, I'm whinging because I'm getting less performance than before not just less than expected performance. Anyhow thanks to one and all for your input in this thread, hopefully I'll eventually get to the bottom of this :)

jeez the gtx almost doubles the 7900/x1950's in most benchmarks and gains even more over them at higher resolutions. what else did you expect from a new generation of cards? triple? quadrupel?

What does everyone expect? The GTS isnt the fastest card, the GTX/ultras are, by like 25% .

I have spoken to so many people who think a gts is pretty much the same as a gtx performance wise. seriously once you go over 1280x1024 the GTX is seriously quite a bit better.

You get what you pay for in this world. I remember having a huge arguement with a guy on another forum about this, he reckoned his evga 8800gts ko had the same performance as a GTX at stock.

After showing him countless benchmarks that prove the gtx was a lot stronger ( at stock, not to mention it could be overclocked too) he still wouldnt believe it and i feel a lot of people have this state of mind.

I'm not having performance problems but i too am having problems with certain AVI files. Depending on what is happening in the video the video breaks up in to what i can only describe as a staircase. It's really odd. Oh and i have problems with playing web based MOV files. Apple trailers gives nothing but a green and purple garbled image.

- You may be CPU limited in flightsims?
- Are you running the GTS at High Quality with Gamma Correct antialiasing and transparency to Multisampling or Supersampling?
- Are you forcing 16X Anisotropic Filtering?

I had the same "staircase" problem, reinstalling the codecs sorted it :)

Thanks. I'll try that shortly. I've heard that disabling D3D options in quicktime also fixes the problem with MOV files. Can't be bothered with that though, just waiting for a fix. :D

Hi,

I've set the transparency to Multisampling and Supersampling with Gamma Correct antialiasing and 16X Anisotropic Filtering and still looks jagged compared with the 7950 card. Have re-installed lomac and lost the white lines around the aircraft :) so it looks like gonna have to try re-installing fs2004 too :( :(

Just installed xvid 1.1.3 28.06.07 and still have the problem :(

edit: Fixed! Check Deblocking Y and compatability render. :D
