8800GTS experiences

Last night I installed my 8800GTS and this is what I think.

I have a AMD X2 3800+ @ 2.5Ghz and a 19" TFT so CPU limitation is a factor.
But as it turns out CPU limitation is nothing to worry about, the CPU is more than capable of getting >60fps so I just keep on raising the AA/AF without much of a performance hit, you can never have too much GPU power.

IQ is indeed a lot better than G70, texture crawling and shimmering is gone, this alone is worth the premium.

The cooler is VERY quiet, even in 3D I can’t hear it over the sound of the PSU and I have a Enermax Noisetaker.

The difference between my old 7800GT is big in older games like HL2 and massive in GPU limited games like F.E.A.R. and Oblivion, I wish I had the 8800GTS when I played those games, I was amazed at the speed of the card when using 4xAA or 8xAA and 16xAF with High Quality and Gamma correct AA.

It also looks like the 8800GTS cards are overclocker friendly, I haven’t tested the max yet but 600Mhz/1800Mhz worked without problems.
Overclocking with nTune is a bit tricky as the “Find Optimal Clocks” setting does not work on my system, it goes to a black screen and stays that way bu manual overlocking does work fortunately.

Also I haven’t found any game issues yet with the 97.02 drivers and stability is very good, not once did it fail or give stability issues and I ran multiple 3Dmark runs and 6 games for a few hours.

Luckily I had no PSU issues with a 485W Enermax with 31A on the 12V rails, also I read some issues with certain mobo's but it works fine in my DFI NF4 Ultra-D, I just connected the PCI Express dongle to the molex marked Extra.

Are there any other things I need to test or look for that you experienced that are positive or negative?

NIce review Dutch Guy, what resolution were you running at - 1280 x 1024 for most things? Also, did you have any uncharacteristic slow downs (i.e. any games were the performance was not as you would expect)?

I think the worse thing about the 8800 drivers is the misting on the Half Life 2 engine / CS Source.

A game this big the problem really should have been addressed well before now.

Apart from that im well happy with the card almost 11000 06 marks awesome :D

everyone with a 8800 gets it ;)

Its all over the nv forums, distant objects have misting over them.
Image quality is superb, but the misting on certain objects makes it look horrid, if that makes sence... They really need to fix it.

Resolution was 1280x1024 as that is the max of my monitor.
The misting is indeed a issue I noticed but as I was testing I did not go into detail, the mist is very light and layered and looks ugly, maybe a reinstall of HL2/Episode 1 will clear up the issue but I wanted to try other games first.
In levels without mist the IQ is amazing at 8xCSAA/16xAF.

Regarding the slowdown, I have not noticed that at all, I played Quake 4 for a couple of minutes at Ultra 8xCSAA/16xAF and the Fraps counter was stuck at 60fps and never went below that.

The only game I noticed a slight slowdown was F.E.A.R. with 4xAA/16xAF where it would be 80+fps without action and in firefights would drop to ~40fps but it was still very playable with all options maxed except Soft Shadows.

I am still looking for a utility that can measure the temperature and log it so I can see what the max temp at load is, does anyone know a program that can do that?

[edit]@Trox, what does your card overclock to?[/edit]

Good tip about Rivatuner, I used to have it with my 7800GT but thought it would not work with the 8800 cards, but it does apparently so I will use that again :)

Tonight I will be checking some more games and doing some more overclocking to see how far it will go, but I wanted 600/1800 at least to be happy and that worked straight away.

The mist!! :p

I haven't noticed any problems with the source engine and my 8800GTX.

The mist or fog problem is acknowledged by Valve and nVidia and it affects everyone.

Edit: Dutch Guy: mine is stable up to 675/1900 under water. Got it clocked to 650 at the moment because after that I get no increase in FPS or 3dmark scores due to CPU bottle neck (same as yerself). Got my Mobo and conroe sitting next to me here at work ready for a pre-xmas build :D
