8800GTS experiences

Wow. Sorry for enjoying a game instead of standing there idle looking miles away to check for a bug.

You cant be playing it that much or be very alert in game if you don't notice that :p You cant see other people on some of the maps its incredibly noticeable and irritating!

If affects HL2 as well obviously and I was planning on finishing Ep1 now as well!

Set it to 650/1800 and played Oblivion for 20 minutes without problems, also a 3DMark2005 and '06 run were artifact free

I am still looking for a utility that can measure the temperature and log it so I can see what the max temp at load is, does anyone know a program that can do that?

The new Nvidia control panel can do that too. If you click on monitor temperatures, there's a tick box that says, "continue to monitor temperature even after i leave this page".

on another note i find running @ 1600*1200 i get much better frame rate in games when using my gts, but running @ 1280*1024 seems to hold it right back.
It seems to just love that res.:D
just my 2p worth.

cheers.

I would run in 1600*1200 or 1920*1200 if my monitor would allow that :o

What is annoying is the way you have to select CSAA and AF for each game.

Installed Rivatuner and found the idle temp is 65C which is kinda high but the load temp is 79C so that is lower than I expected.

Anyway still running strong at 650/1800, I have been testing/playing games the last 2 hours and no stability problems or big game issues which is better than I expected.

The problem with CSS is annoying indeed... I didn't noticed it while playing cs_militia though

I hope my 8800gtx will be overclock friendly later when I get it under water :) . It won't clock far on the core for now, the card gets really hot, but it seems to be doing artifact free at 2200mhz on memory. I'm really impressed with that, right now I'm really eager to get a water block :D

Hi DutchGuy.

Lucky guy, living in the happiest city on Earth! lol! Dance Valley is awesome!!

But on the subject at hand, i use NVTemplogger that can be found on Guru3d. It sits in your toolbar, displays the temp of ** card and can be viewed in a nice colourful graph too. Better than using the NV panel.

Yeah, I live so close to Dance Valley I can hear it shen I stand in my garden :D

I installed Rivatuner as I used that on my 7800GT and that has a logger as well that runs in the background and Rivatuner also displays the clockspeed of the Streaming Processors.

KWJay, does that do sli as well? Does it monitor or give the temps of both cards? That's something that the NV control panel does'nt do anymore.

Dutch Guy, u are one luck SOB! lol! Been there the last 2 years. DV is my fave place in the world! lol!

Those are the clocks i have been running mine at since i got my card. I'd recommend manually setting the fan speed when u r about to start gaming, as i forgot to do this, Rivatuner didn't control the fans as i was expecting, and while playing F.E.A.R. i got artifacts and a whole system crash!! I set mine to 85-90% just before i start playing, then reset back to about 60% once i've finished and its cooled down a bit. It culd probably go further, but it seems happy and i don't think it needs pushing anymore.

Pastymuncher, i don't know about SLI mate, i only have a single card. Might be worth a try tho.

That is a good tip, I don't think I need to do that just yet as the computer is in the loft which is quite cold during winter but when it is summer it is scorching there.

Good thread Dutch Guy on clocking the GTS. I have just ordered a 8800 GTS so am rereading it for some useful info. Not too long till the new build...

Would this be good for a sticky for all the new GTS owners out there?

dont have much clocking experience at all. so are you saying that getting the temps down allows you to clock the core further, because im a bit dissapointed with my clock, cant get the core past 620 without crash in 3d mark :(

Sometimes that can help, the lower the temp the higher the overclock, until you reach a point where the core needs more voltage to run, that is when you need to voltmod the card.

Usually better cooling is not needed if you run stock core voltage as you will not be limited by heat.

My 8800GTS runs 100% error free at 650Mhz but 675Mhz and Oblivion locks up, no graphic tearing or other image corruption just a had lock which could indicate too little core voltage.

Have a look at this roundup of 8800GTX cards and pay close attention to the Sparkle Calibre card that has a Peltier cooler and still can't overclock further and is even one of the slowest cards out of the group:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2873&p=5

So it's much louder, consumes more power, is more expensive and does not overclock further :p

the thing is, although i cantget much out of the core, i can get the mem to 1150 and its still stable. if i were to put this back down to 900 say, would i be able to get more out of my core.

p.s im not at home currently thus me not just trying that

That is something you can try.

I would set the fanspeed to 100% manually and see if that helps, if not try slowing the memory down and see if that gets the core any higher.

If both will not work you are prolly limited by core voltage.
