8800GT's IN SLi

Hi all,

Anyone got any idea how these perform in Sli and would my system be faced with any bottlenecks?

Was actually looking at having 2 x 8800GTX's but not sure if power supply will take it?

My monitor is a Samsung 226BW so it has native resolution of 1680 x 1050.

If I am faced with the situation of just 1 x 8800GTX due to power supply restraints, would it be more of an advantage to have 2 x 8800GT's in Sli?

Advise much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the prompt reply,

I have strayed away from ATI cards ever since buying a PowerColor 9600XT about 4 years ago and then it blew up!! I also was never convinced that the drivers were any good.. is this the case now!! There is this general perception all round that nvidia is the better camp to buy from, well certainly up until this 4870X2 beast came out!!!

Could I run a GTX 280 or 4870X2 with my power supply do you think. The specs for the 9800GX2 recommend that you use a 'true 8-pin' power connector which is something my PSU does not have.

Thanks again

It depends...

The G92 8800 GT's (512MB) are low power and a pair of them should see off a 4870 in most benchmarks in an intel system.

Also if you can find them, the G92 512MB GTS are virtually matched to the GTX while only needing half the power so again, a good card.

Can't comment to much on the AMD but you do have a 2x16 SLI board!

Edit... Just checked your PSU .... I have one also. Stunning PSU! Will easily cope with a pair of 8800 GTX's or a GTX 280... in fact I'd have a fair punt it would eat up SLI 280's since it has 600W @ 12v

8800GT SLI is very nice - with overclocking it will show the 280GTX a clean pair of heels* - definatly more than a match for a 4800 series card except for the X2.

You will need a reasonably fast CPU tho - a core 2 at 3gig would be the minimum imo.

* until it runs out of memory or memory bandwidth - which doesn't really happen in current gen games unless you play at very high res.

But then you overclock the 280 and beat the 8800 gt

8800GTS 512

These seem quite difficult to get hold of but how are they compared to the 8800GT? I heard a rumour too that they did not work very well in Sli, is this true??

With the small amount of memory in my machine will that be a bottleneck?

Cheers

The 8800GTS 512 is virtually the same card as the 8800GT. It's just that the 8800GT has some texture units disabled hence the additional power of the GTS (only 12.5% from memory)

The GTS is rare now since Nvidia decided to rename the card the 9800GTX, just adding memory that clocked a little faster, adding a second SLI connector for 3 way SLI and enabling improving the power managment by allowing the card to turn off when not used.

The only SLI issue I'm aware of compared to the GTX is that you can only SLI 2 GTS's

You'll really need a board with 2 x 16 electrical if it's PCI-E 1.0, 1.1 or you may get away with 2 x 8 if it's a PCI-E 2.0

Very glad I came across this thread. Currently have a 8800gt but looking at a 790i board to run 280 sli. Originally was just going to get two standard 280s and OC them a bit, but it looks like with the price of 8800gt's popping another one in for a stopgap till the 55nm 280 looks like a good idea.
