8800GTS or 2900Pro?

ATI Launch price is quoted at $249 which equals approx £150 after VAT. I guess prices will drop a little after a month or two but not by much. With 320MB GTS's available for £170, ATI's card will need to at least equal NVidia's performance to sell well.

I need a new card but will sit on the bench until more info arrives. How the 2900Pro's overclock will be anybodies guess, but nearly all 8800GTS's do very well indeed.

Err unlikely. When has the dollar/pound conversion plus VAT ever worked?

If you do the calc, a 8800 320Mb GTS should only be £150 inc VAT here as well. ATI have listed it exactly the same dollar price as a GTS.

We always get robbed over here.

And don't forget GIbbo says this card is only a short term 2 month temporary card with only a few 1000 available. Can't see them dropping the price cause at £170 they will sell them all, nevermind at £150.00

US to UK price conversions are much more realistic now. Look at any of the big US sites and compare the prices of CPU's, Graphics Cards, RAM etc and things will be pretty close once VAT is added.

I work in the US quite frequently and there is no real advantage in buying PC kit over there anymore. I guess that's one of the advantages of competition in a Global Market.

..and don't forget that US sites do not show local sales taxes which need to be added to the sticker price.

Although the gap has closed we are still ripped off albeit by £10-£30 and mid priced items.

First one I looked at, at random:

Sapphire HD2600XT GDDR 4 ocuk £79.99 plus VAT

On newegg it's $139.99 = £69.61 at todays exchange rate - £10 price difference before VAT or US taxes or about 14% - not small.

If you go through the rest of neweggs site you will see the same differences in price cropping up and roughly 10 -15% is the premium we pay over here.

So if you were building a £1000 - £2000 highend system you could save between £100 and £300 - still worth it if over there on a trip anyway.

Therefore the 320Mb GTS and the 2900 pro both should be £150 inc VAT over here but we end up paying £170.

And don't even get me started on software prices............

I would seriously wait until the 2900pro's have been reviewed/benched. They might even be speed binned XT cores that can't reach XT speeds for all we know. Never, ever buy anything on pre-order. First reason as already stated, you will be paying for it now and not getting anything for weeks. Second reason is it may suck. I found out the hard way with my crappy old Abit 650i Sli motherboard that was completely unuseable. Third reason is that the prices may drop a little after a couple of weeks.

Seems like they can reach XT speeds tho.

I'm waiting for reviews/benchmarks on the 2900 pro's. If they can reach XT speeds (even stock speeds) then they are definately worth a buy.

How is your card doing now Rackerz?. If it's doing fine then why not sell that card and keep the money for the Pro version?. If you can get about the same that you paid for it then it wouldn't be a great loss as long as you have another PCI-E card to get you by for now.

The X2900XT will lose value if the Pro's are what we are all wanting from them.

hopefully they will perform well and nvidia will drop the price of the 8800gts 320mb in time for me getting one :D

Not great, it's going to be RMA'd. I'm gonna wait for some benchmarks from the Pro to see how well they'll do.
