8800gts or hd2900xt

1280x 1024 perhaps?

Id grab the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT SILENT Heatpipe 512MB. Very good price shown & great performance. You get the Half Life 2 Black box with it also. :)

I would get the 8800 GTS 640MB as you can get it the cheapest out of the 2 as tbh either is good enough for that res, tbh i would consider getting the 8800 GTS 320MB version as thats still plenty good enough for that res.

Tbh I dont entirely agree that the 320mb is more than enough at that res, in more texture intensive games the 640mb is definitely the better choice out of the two. The 2900 is the fastest card out of the three cards though.

As you said old drivers, thats when the 2900 had just came out, it didn't have any drivers back then, but its now faster than the 320mb, and even the 640mb GTS, its even faster than the GTX/Ultra in the odd game to now as drivers have improved it quite a bit. :)

This is true... the 2900XT is faster than the 8800GTS after having played with my mates cards recently.

True but remember also costs more, uses more power and is much louder, the drivers have made a significant performance increase though so hats off to ATI for that.

remeber nvidia drivers have also improved since then.

The 2900 AA hit has definitely reduced up to 4x, past that yes it does take a hit but up to 4xAA its far improved in that department.

Plus im guessing you dont exactly have an nvidia card to judge whether there has been an improvement? I may be wrong if so I apologise...
