Hi there,

Just ordered the XFX 8800GTS 640MB. I'm just trying to decide which operating system to install for best performance.

Which is better for this card, XP or Vista ?

Windows XP is the best at the moment allthough I think the Vista drivers aint far behind XP now.

XP drivers have a ton of glitches for me but gaming is fine.

No glitches when I briefly tried Vista last week for the Lost Planet demo.

ok i'll stick with XP for now then :)

what would you guys say the best cpu to get at the moment is, following looks like the best performance/price cpu (i will be overclocking). is there any point in quad-core just yet.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail

If you can hold on till June 22nd get a quad core otherwise the E6600 is the best CPU with regards to price/performance

Hi mate :)

Yeah, Intel are meant to be coming along with some new chips and some price cuts in june/july. New chip wise, the one Im keeping my eye on is the E6850 - $266 (so about £130-170), with a 3Ghz stock speed, and 4MB of cache. Reason being that whilst quad core is nice, theres very little software out there right now that takes advantage of dual core, so unless you moved into hardcore compiling and stuff since I last saw ya mate, I dont think its worth it. Also, as its clocked at 3GHz out the box, the chances are its fairly decent silicon, so you've got no risk with the 3Ghz, and it will probably clock higher fairly easily. Quad Core wise though, if you are interested, I think its the 2.4GHz C2Q they're dropping to $266, but as I say, I think for now dual core is more prudent than 4, due to the slow takeup of dual core.

A C2D, DS3, and the 8800GTS should do you happy :) Im guessing you finally got a little fed up with the 7600GT :D

OS Wise, unless you fancy playing around with it (which I know you sometimes do), XP is currently still the better gaming OS; its currently still got better performing drivers, and has higher compatability, whereas Vista has some odd issues with varying games.

hi mate,

yeh the memory on my 7600gt is not getting sufficient volts to even run stable at stock speeds, i think you can guess why. I'm also trying to play other games than source now and it's holding my rig back.

what is the best mainboard to get at the moment (for overclocking), you mentioned the DS3. do you mean the ds3 here ?

I meant this one:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-061-GI

But they're pretty much the same board, the DS3P has additional firewire I believe, hence it costs a bit more, and Im not personally sure on thier general overclocking capability, but I'd imagine it'd be almost identical (but sometimes tech decides to be not as simple as it should). They used to be problematic, but they seem to have mostly been ironed out now, and are pretty well know as a clocking board, even if not the most extreme one. The extreme clockers cost a lot more, so I reckon the DS3 is a good board for the cash.

I've personally used one, and aside from minor niggles which turned out to be psu related rather than the mobo, it wasnt hard to overclock with, and seemed to be stable. Only criticism I heard from the mate who's got it is that the onboard sounds ok, but its in no way brilliant (not too great at games where theres lots of 3D channels etc)

Voltages, I guess you're suspecting that mobo or the Hiper ;)

If the PSUs the issue, the Enermax, Corsair, Tagan,Seasonic and FSP are all very highly rated.
