I am trying to decide whether it is time to upgrade the 640mb 8800gts i got at the minute to a newer card. I use my pc for games like call of duty 4, and counterstrike and game on 1680x1050 all the time. I also use the pc for photoshop and what not.

Just wonderin whether it is worth the money to upgrade it and whether i would notice a big difference

Even upgrading to the 512mb GTS would show you a good performance leap. So in that regard I think a 4850 would do you well and the 4870 a little bit better :).

A 4Ghz quad powering the 4870 monster will be a pretty mean gaming system. I hope when you get your new equipment that you'll be entering the benching databases on here?.

Yeah shouold be, my ocz vanquisher had me running at 4ghz on me old board, just wasnt too stable. got a more stable board now and get a better cooler should work fine :P

Good luck on the 4Ghz and when you get the 4870. It will blow your GTS away :).

I think I'll have to get a new CPU quite soon. Although my screen is capable of 2048x1536 the 512mb of RAM on the 4870 will not give me AA performances at this resolution so I'll be on 1920x1200 I imagine as the 4870 is ok at this resolution with 4xAA. At your resolution I could imagine you could pump more AA into your gaming, especially with a Quad at your speed. I don't know if my E2180 @ 3.2Ghz will be enough to let the 4870 run freely. I hope it is but I'll buy a new one if needed. I should have just bought a quad before. I had the money but didn't think I'll ever need it.

I have a BFG 680i mobo behind me and a second 8800GTX but I don't know if I can be bothered hooking it all up to experience SLI then take it all down again in a few days to sell it all. I don't think my CPU would be enough for SLI 8800GTX anyway. Probably better to leave it as 8800GTX in SLI might dampen my thoughts on a single 4870 :).
