In the market for a new graphics card. I am considering selling my old X1950pro. The best cards out at the moment seem to be the 8800 by nvidia and the HD 2900 by ATI.

I was wondering which is better?

Right.... My take on it.

They are pretty closely matched the 8800GTS and the X2900XT

It pretty much comes down to the drivers, and tbh ATI's drivers win for me. Regular official updates, no more having to change drivers to get a game to work, plus I can get multiple monitors to work the way I want them with ATI's drivers.

If you're not after the utter fastest cards *8800GTX/Ultra* then either of them will be great. Just depeds on which way your driver preference wavers.

I agree 100% with Flibster. It's so close it's going to come down to drivers. And in that department, ATi are miles ahead. You get regular updates, most (if not all) fix issues and improve performance.

Just be wary that the 2900XT is the hotter, noisier, and slightly more power hungry card. :)

What's the situation with AA these days on X2900s?

Imo, the AA is fine, i mean, its AA what else is it supposed to do appart from AA lol.
And the new drivers do it well

2900, its 95% faster than the GTS with AA enabled, even though its got a problem with it still, once fixed it will be even faster, its even faster than the GTX in some cases to with AA enabled.

I think he meant "95% of cases it is faster".

Most likely check out that review it comes out top most of the cases, hopefully when the 7.6s come they take it right up there.

If you had asked as the x2900 had come out, everyone would have said the GTS, and that was true at the time, as the drivers were not helping the card.

BUT

A big hand to ATI, who have come down and herd the comunity and decided to do something about it. With regular driver updates, the x2900 has become a real contendor, and just outs the GTS (depending on what one you referer to 320MB or 640MB).

If you had also asked between the GTX and the x2900, i would have to say the GTX, ATM, but since its between the GTS and x2900, i will agree with the x2900 being top dog ATM.

In all honesty I would still go for the 8800GTS. Yeah sure, the 2900XT has improved quite a bit since it first came out but there is still loads of improvements to be made, especially with some games where the performance is still truly dismal. Also I'm guessing the image quality issue with AA enabled is still prevalent.

Time is ticking too .... Geforce 9 is out in about six months!

The fact most of those benchies in the link don't seem to have AA enabled doesn't inspire confidence for me.
