I'm currently looking to dual boot Vista and either Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

Once installed I want to get Compiz Fusion running, but I have read some reports of it not getting on well with the 8800GTX.

Are there any peeps on the forum running a similiar setup to mine.

Just wondering as I would like my first steps into Linux to be as pain free as possible.
Then I can get learning.

Thanks in advance....;)

[GodFather Mode on]

So a.. you wanna joina da family huh ?

Compiz comes as standard in 7:10. My daughter is running an 8800 and had ZERO problems dual booting XP with Ubuntu.

We did have to choose "Use safe graphics mode" when booting from the live CD though. That doesn't mean your graphics will be unpleasant. It boots up all spangley.

D/l an ISO and try the live cd. Your'll get a gist of whats involved without going through the install process.

If you go ahead with the install its better to stick linux on a separate drive rather than bugger around with your partitions. A bootloader called GRUB gets installed in Mbr giving you the choice of which O/s to boot into when you switch the machine on.

Works fine with my 8800GT.

I would say expect to read a lot and have patience with it!

All Nvidia cards play nice with linux, once the drivers installed.

I believe that Heron is going to include Wubi as standard... if you're looking for a pain-free way to install Linux, then this should fit the bill. It effectively allows you to install Linux from within Windows - not just as a VM, though, a full blown version of Linux that boots separately from Windows.

I used to be wary of Wubi, although I've used it a couple of times now and it worked fine. However, as it's officially gonna be part of Heron, it should be fine :)

Excellent. I wasn't sure the 8800gt would be problem free with 7.10

Hardy Heron is to be released next month :D

Its not problem free!

At least for me it wasn't.

To get it to work I had to add the following launch commands:

nosplash vga=791

Without that it would not boot.

This is fixed in the Hardy alpha releases.

even ATI are good under linux now, esp the 8.2/8.3 proprietaries.

any card from the last few years from either maker work well now, of course YMMV :)

alpha release of opensuse 11.0 has this wubi thing. I didnt know what it was so booted into to windows and tried to install inside winblows. Stopped half way through after I realised what it was doing lol now my windoze drive has been partly infested with linux. Prob gonna have to format my windows drive to get rid of it.

I'll stick with Gparted and live Cd's for linux installs

As Oxy said it aint problem free.

Tried to boot the Live CD just now and couldn't get it to boot.

Will try adding your commands and give it a try.

Off out for some beer now so will try it in the morning.:D

so am i :) I'll look at this thread midday tommorrow and see if u need some help :p

Had a go with the commands Oxy used.

Still no joy here will need to scour the intarweb for things to try.
Not much fun with the hangover I have.:o

Its annoying because I tried the disc in work and it booted without issue.
All generic hardware in that system though, I suppose.

Launch off the disk in safe graphics mode, but add this parameters by pressing 'e' when you have the graphics safe mode line highlighted.

Then delete the splash bit. Then add nosplash vga=791

This seems to only work when u add those commands to the safe graphics command line thingy, the second line down.

Pressing 'b' then boots the system with the addition parameteres

There is another way round this witch im pretty sure will work for. It's not something I would really recommend but if you wanna just see what linux is like you could play about with the Ubuntu 8/04 alpha 6 image.

I have been playing with it, and it launches with my 8800GT without altering anything.

As its alpha though there are gonna be bugs (seems ok to me tho) but if you just wanna play it should be alright.

Its upto you dude......... if it dont work, wait for 8.04 full release next month.

Are you trying to boot from the 64-bit live CD?

I had the same problem with the 64-bit version. I installed the 32-bit version and everything went fine.

EDIT: Just noticed you got 4Gb of RAM so 32-bit probably isn't an option.
Try Ubuntu Hardy tbh.

It was the 64bit version I tried.

Had a go with the Hardy Heron alpha 6 and installed from within windows.

Long story short, I borked my Vista install.

Just got it all back up and running.

If people are going to try Linux there shouldn't be this many issues.
Have read that there may be issues with the IP35 Pro and Ubuntu.

Have to say its put me off slightly but I am glutton for punishment so I'll give the 32bit a try.

It was easier to install Hackintosh Leopard than this.;)

indeed i found the hackintosh easier than linux to start with. But wanted to go legit with linux :)

I wouldn't have tried that windows installer for linux. You learnt hard, sorry to hear you lost it all, hope you backed up. Anyway, best bet is to partition you HDD using Gparted or a windows based HDD partitioning tool. I guess you know this if you have a Hackintosh partition.
