Got a new 8800GTX installed in my mates new computer yesterday, got it to a nice and smooth 13.5K score in 3dmark. Unfortunately the system crashed on us, defective harddrive(thanks OcUK :P) and i had to reinstall it. Now the Proxycon test runs at 13fps and every game i can play has a really bad FPS.
Any clue as to what could cause this?
Drivers are the latest WHQL ones.

Is your link width running at 1x or 16x if you look in CPU-Z? What mobo and specs for the rest of the system? I had problems with mine dropping it down to 1x which cause similar terrible performance in 3dmark.

Have you checked to see if vista has done one of it's automatic updates?

I have seen a few people on here in the last week or two where vista has download new gfx drivers by itself and they have crippled performance.

Yeah i've specifically made sure it didn't do that, had Vista do that trick on my own rig and it messed it up, so the only drivers i've touched is the 169 WHQL ones from nvidia.com

No i'm sorry i don't have any XP discs right now, my girl took the one i have with her to the states for the next few weeks. Plus it definitely has worked on this OS, that's what bugs me, i had it working hours ago, and i haven't really changed anything, it just stopped working.

Fair enough, no need to apologise. :p How about installing older drivers than and seeing if that does anything? Maybe the drivers that came with the graphics card and mobo?

I'll try, already tried the newer ones, the newest beta ones, and that didn't work at all. But what i really can't understand is that these are the exact drivers that gave me 13K in 3dMark before rebooting :/

All I can think is perhaps something messed up with the drivers. Try uninstalling them, drivercleaner or similar and re-install.

Or even try the 163.71 beta ones.

Also have you checked to make sure the GTX is running at it's proper clock speeds

Detected via Rivatuner, runs at the stock settings :) Also lost my ability to change the clocks in Rivatuner though. I'll try 163.71, be right back :)

Also tried uninstalling drivers, going to safe mode and using driver sweeper & driver cleaner, and then reinstalling, didn't really help.

Odd that about the ability to alter clocks

What does it show you? N/A?

If so there is a thread on here with a guy with that problem and i;m not sure if a solution or not. I think he reinstalled the os again to fix it from memory.:(

Yep he reinstalled the os as drivercleaner and reinstalling drivers didnt work. He had pretty much the same issue your having.

Nope it doesn't show N/A, it does show the clocks.
And i had it working a couple of hours ago, some setting must have changed.
Saw his thread and was wondering if i had the same problem, but i really doubt it.

Okay imma simply have to stop with this, can't take anymore for now, gonna clean the whole mess and try to install it tommorow. Have had 3 hectic months and needed to relax, so far i've spent 6 of my 9 vacation days fixing computers for people, for free. I need to stop doing this :P

I have absolutely no idea about what i can do now, i reinstalled the whole thing, and it's still running as bad as before?

Alright woke up now, gonna have a go at this again, it pretty much can't be a software issue if reinstalling the whole thing got it working right?

That guy that had issues was me :D

If a fresh install hasn't fixed it then it seems to be pointing to hardware?

My fresh install gave me a 3dmark06 score of 12,400 after rivatuner overclocking aswell!

Can you test the card in another rig perhaps?
