8800GTX Bracket removal

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the metal bracket that extends an inch or so from the end of the 8800 GTX (on the OCUK version at least)?

Its retained by three screws, and is removable. And I'd like to remove it so that I can leave the middle drive bay in place in my Antec P182 case.

It doesnt look like it has any passive cooling function, but it looks like it might be intended to ensure other components are kept clear of the card.

Can I remove it without effecting function?

You got pics? My BFG GTX didn't have a bracket like that. Only the PCB extends beyond the heatsink with mine.

I'll try and post one later, but I had a look at the product photo on OCUK website, and their card is identical but without the bracket http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-051-OK , so I think I'm safe to assume I can remove it.
