card just died so looking for a replacement

heres is current system

CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Corsair 4GB XMS2 Dominator
Ocuk GeForce 8800 GTX
Samsung 2433BW,DGM 24"
XFX S775 nForce 680i SLI

So just looking for best card, prefer nvidea but would use ati

Overclock that cpu m8 ;)

If you can get your hands on one then grab a 5850 or alternatively you can buy a 260gtx or 4870 / 90 for a decent price. :)

Yea i do prefer Nvidea last Ati i had the fan disintegrated :D
and i did have it clocked to 3.4 but could really notice any day to day improvement apart from the NB fan spinning for its life lol
so knocked it back down to hopefully prolong its life..

Any recommends on brand .

Put it in the cooker at 200c for 10min :)
tried that already .. didnt really help as most of it was in a puddle at the bottom of cooker :D

Hey man, if the 8800GTX is really dead try putting it in the oven, fixed both my 8800GTX and 8800GT that way - put the oven on at gas mark 6/200c, let it heat up fully, put the card on a tray in a way as the components are non in direct contact with any hot metal, leave it in for 5 - 6 minutes then turn the oven off and open the door slightly, let the oven come down in temperature until the card is easily touchable and not "too hot" and give it a whirl when it is back down to temperature. - oh and remember to take the cooler and thermal paste off unless you want a stinker

EDIT: Damn, beaten to it twice!

BTW i still havnt tried this although if it does work i can use the gtx for my sons pc ...

Anywa decided to go for an xfx 5870 seeing as i had a few quid saved up from not smoking for the last 6 weeks :D

Been reading that my q6600 may be a bottleneck with this card and it should be clocked to atleast 3.0ghz...

any thoughts ?

Depends on your heatsink and fan

that is true, a Q6600 will bottleneck anything likea G200 or 5***at stock speed, the highest performance delta- for effort- comes at 3.6ghz, I would save a hundred pounds on the 5870 and get a 5850 instead. Use some of that ssaved money to get a decent cooler for the Q6600, heck even the H50. The 5850 is in essence a downclocked 5850 and achieveing almost the same speed clock for clock. I havent heard of any not being able to clock higher than the 5870. I have gotten mine to 1030 - with the 5870 being set at 850

Well the cooler is a Zalman CNPS9700, never had any issues with heat
so might be worth clocking it a bit..
really want to get the best i can get as i plan on upgrading to an I7 some time next year

how do you overclock a cpu, theres so much talk of it but how is it done does anyone have an idiot proof guide? i want to boost my q6600 a bit

Enter the bios and change the FSB from 266 (I think that's it at stock) to 333 (try this to begin with). Most Q6600 should hit 3.0ghz. Once that seems stable then you can try small incremental changes. If it doesn't like it the worst that will happen is that it will just reset itself to 2.4 :) Check out the overclocking sticky too.

Theres a decent fool proof guide i found by googling

"Q6600 overlocking on the 680i, How to (56 killer!!!!!!)"

Mines currently stable at 3.0ghz and have my HD 5870 packed and awaiting despatch :D
