Hi,

I've got myself a Nvidia 8800GTX and it states that it can output in HD quality. The output sockets on the card are DVI ones and so I am guessing that some soft of adapter is needed to turn it into a HDMI cable?

But if an adapter is used, you can upscale quality right? So is it never going to be an actual HD output?

Sorry if that sounds confusing but I had a hard time trying to put my question into words! Thanks

It should be more than capable of displaying at 1920 x 1080. Yes, there are adapters which take DVI and digital audio out and convert them to HDMI. The 8800 GTX does support HDCP so you shouldn't have much trouble.

DVI is carries the same signal as HDMI so will do HD video, just no audio.

I use a DVI/HDMI cable for 720p/1080p outputs to LCD.

Any idea where to get them or and specs on them (yes i know, no competitors!)

Thanks for the quick response. I'm a bit confused as to what HD actually is. Is it just a high screen resolution?

You've hit the nail on the head with that one ;)

Firstly, a DVI to HDMI cable doesn't loose you any quality, it's the same video signal going through a different shaped plug. DVI doesn't carry audio.

As for what HD is, these days, the term HD generally means 1280x720, or FULLHD - 1920x1080

Yep, on the PC, we've been HD ready for years ;)

V1N.

Thanks. I think my LCD is 1680 x 1050 format, so is that somewhere in the middle? Can it handle FULLHD but scale it down?

Second question: Do you have to use the LCDs HDMI input to make the most of the picture or can you use its DVI input?

As long as your monitor is HDCP compatible.

I watch some HD stuff on my Samsung 226BW and it looks very good, not as good/clean/sharp as an HD or HD ready panel though.

In your graphics settings, you should be able to select nVidia or panel scaling. See which looks best (I use panel).

On the TV input, if your set has a DVI port use that as it should do 1:1 pixel mapping (for when not using HD material) but bear in mind you'll have no audio so will need to do that sep. You'll also need to switch between resolutions (or have them set separately) gor monitor and LCD TV (two diff native resolutions) if using your two DVI-out's on your GTS. When I first hooked up the PC to my LCD is looked crap until I realised I was scaling a 1680 x 1050 image rather than using native resoluion for TV.
