Wow am i impressed. absolutely all sliders on max, 1280x1024 (planning on getting a 22inch in the next few months)with 16xqaa and 16xaf it runs through areas with huge amounts of foliage, trees. between 40-50fps! havent seen it go below 34fps yet.

However towns are a bit different, there will be a part in a town (mainly the waterfront with the ship) where i will look and the frame rate will dip to about 25, and the rest will be back up in the 40's 50's, i don't really understand because the towns seem a lot less graphically intense than the outdoors, and when im looking over a clear bit of terrain encompassing the massive draw distance the fps will go to above 70 in some cases?

Just a bug perhaps? or is my x2 4400 and 1 gig of ram affecting it?

1gig of ram  get another quick!...

you may want to try "oblivion optimizer" and "streamline" found in mooses' oblivion thread, in the pc games section

cheers,do they fix wierd framerates then?

yeh im getting another gig soon, a few games do hitch and acces the harddrive which can gt annoying.

I use a 22", 2gb ram, P4 (but did use an e6600) with no problems.

You're ram's possibly holding you back as everything else should cope. Even with my 3.4ghz P4 instead of the C2D the game's fully playable with everything at full and stuff like water reflections set to full (even reflects your character when you're wading through rivers!) with no problems.

yeh i have that water reflection tweak, coupled with some new lod's and the make it pretty pack

All it is, is the wierd low frame rate areas in certain towns. could it be the ram, i thought less ram would just result in a bit of hitching (accessing the hd) not lower frame rates. I say low, they are like 25fps but its enough to notice a difference.

towns will always be low. lots of memory usage, lots of polygons, lots of straight edges to be AA'd, lots of textures lots of A.I.

I tried 4xAA/8xAF, high quality with everything at max at 1920x1200...... 12fps min  and thats with an 8800GTX!

a quick muck about with nvidia cp, some slider adjustments and 2xAA and up to 25ish min in towns. (was snowing which does'nt help).

no matter what you read, Oblivion is a hugely demanding game. I really think to play maxed out at high resolution with mods and AA you need a clocked up c2d and 8800 sli.

have to say though that at the higher resolutions AA is not essential and some of the sliders can be reduced without any noticeable visual loss.

a gtx at 1680 x 1050 should be perfect.

surprised as in its bad or good?
had 1gig a year ago and games chugged a lot then. until a few weeks ago my brothers 3200+ 1gig ran oblivion on med settings due to a not so great graphic card. He had random slowdowns and very inconsistent frame rates :)

hm maybe another gig is in order, even though the only slowdowns are in random places in towns :(

thanks for the reply. This has reassured me a bit. I see benchmarks that show like 50fps in towns at maximum everything. I mean outside it runs an absolute treat 40-60+fps with 16xqaa and 16xaf :D. I think my cpu may be bottlenecking it abit as when even when i put 2x or 4xaa on the fps is still the same.

What is wierd though is that it is only certain pockets/areas of towns. Ive also noticed that a background with an npc will bring it down to 30 where as when the npc is gone its back up to 60+. surely one imperial city guard cant half my frames?

why don't you try going down to 4 or 8 x AA if the FPS is really bugging you. There can't be that much difference in the look but you're likely to get better FPS.

oops, noticed you tried that already. Extra RAM is your friend. Hard to believe you're getting the same fps at 2x as 16xqaa?!?!?!?

i know its wierd. What settings do you run it at mate?

perhaps you have the nvidia control panel running higher than in the actual game...

well all my settings are done in the control panel anyway because oblivon itself wont let you use aa and hdr. I have to set the AA setting to override application.

ok guys, think i fixed it. Did a clean install of oblivion, deleted all saved games, mods, old ini file e.t.c.

Just started the game again and now im running around the imperial city with no noticeable slowdowns at max everything 8xqaa and 16af! Am so happy. I'm thinking some of the ini modding i did ages ago for my 7800gtx to get better performance must have actually hindered my 8800gtx. All running super smooth now

Thanks for all your help.
