Just about to start OC'ing my 8800GTX.

I looked and noticed that idle temp was at 56c and during 3dMark06 maxed out at 69c.

Fan is set to standard settings.

Assuming I ramp the GPU fan up to 100% during overclock tests, what sort of max temp should I stay within?

Thanks.

Whatever doesn't cause grahical glitches.

It's as simple as that really. The thermal shutdown for the card is 116 degrees but you will find glitches or your system will hang well before that.

Look round on this forum and I think you will find a lot of people have their oc 8800 cards up near 80 degrees,

Not sure if you can compare the GTS to the GTX but mine gets to 82 degrees.

Hope that helps

Hmm,

I've just overclocked my 8800GTX to 625 Core, 1000 Memory. Now i like a very quiet system, and in playing around with Rivatuner, the most acceptable noise levels (with other case fans on minimum) is with the GPU fan set at 45%. However, the GPU temp is reported at a toasty 79C. I've set up the fan control to increase at 80C and every 5C from there, to keep things cool when gaming, but the question is.. is 79C a bit much at idle? Am I significantly reducing the lifespan of the card?

Not sure what you mean by acceptable noise. AT 70% I can't hear my fan and it's liveable at 100% cause it only goes to that speed in 3d and that's when I'm playing games so the fan noise does not bother me then.

And 79C is a bit too toasty for idle IMO. You want to be aiming for that under stress  Is your system stable in games? Most 8800 cards fall over at 85 degrees so your fan going 50% at that temp won;t help at all IMO. You will even hit the termal shutdown of the card before you hit 100% fan speed

If you use Rivatuner, why not have the fan set low and the clocks low when working in desktop and have it ramp up both in games?

I really do notice the difference. The GPU fan is the noisiest thing in my system after 45%. 70% to me sounds like a hurricane. Currrently playing with settings in Rivatuner, maybe the solution is to do a big shift after 80C (say to 60 or 70%) as that will indicate to the system that I am gaming.

Anyway, I'm now off to see my West Ham lose. Will be back later!

I would guess you are gaming if you are in 3d mode so set up Rivatuner to nice low clocks and fan speed in 2d, then select higher fan speed and overclock in 3d mode.

Your fan will only switch over to the higher speed once you kick in something 3d which most likely will be a game.
