8800GTX overheating

I've had my BFG 8800 GTX for over 18 months now and it's been a great card. As of last night, it seems to have developed some kind of heat issue - the system locks during games with a screen full of artifacts and prompts a system reset.

I checked the GPU temp in Vista and it was running 75c idle  whereas it used to be around 50c.

I cranked the GPU fan speed up to 100% and it cooled it down to about 60c and games run for a while, but it eventually overheats.

I've never overclocked the card - it's only ever run at stock speed and it's the very original BFG model, not an OC/OC2. I'm going to have the card out and clean off any dust, but I can't understand why it's suddenly developed this heat problem - it just went like this last night.

Other than cleaning the card, is there anything else I could try?

probably loads of dust gathered in fan area over 18 months and air cant get in try cleaning it and if still the same rma it ?

I suspect the warmer weather has been enough to tip the balance and give you this problem.

A can of compressed air is really good for blasting out the dust bunnies from your rig. Also check the vents and fans in your case to unsure that there is a good flow of air through it - its surprising the amount of dust and the difference a clean makes to the system temps.

could just need a clean out, yeah. although 70c idle isnt that high :/ mines been idling at 66c or just over since the day i bought it. never skipped a beat

edit: just checked mine. 71c idle. driver update anything to do with that?

GPU is 48'C Idle. Diode is 58'C Idle. This is with 100% fan (applied on every start up) and no overclock.

With 620Mhz core, 1600Mhz Shader speeds and 1000Mhz Memory I'm getting 50.3'C Idle with the diode sitting at 60'C.

I've had my main overclock fail on me due to a little dust gathered in the fan. When I say little I mean it. It was hardly anything but after removing this my GTX returned to normal and no overheating happened again.

guys im no expert on this sort of thing but rivatuner is a must for this, the stock fan profile on this card is shocking, change it, i went from 70 idle to 55 idle. not sure thats your problem as it sounds like dust and whatnot but its worth a look.

Aye. That's what I'm using to set this. I never mentioned it in my last post though :).

Thanks for the advice guys :)

I did actually install the new WHQL 17.15 (or whatever version they are) that came out on May 16th. It's worked fine for a few days and only started giving me problems yesterday, so I don't think it's the drivers. Even so, I reverted to 169.xx drivers this morning but didn't have time to test anything.

I know the fan's got dust in it because I cleaned the dust out of everything else except the gfx card - I couldn't be bothered to remove it from the board basically :D I'm really hoping it's just a congestion of dust and not something more sinister...

Unfortunately it seems a bit more terminal than I thought.

I cleaned out the fan but it made no difference since the gpu reached 78c idle and I started getting artifacts and hangs on the desktop :(

I'm down to a 7950GX2....euuurch :p

Definitely sounds like something is failing with it. Definitely try removing all dust though and checking all fans/case cooling and looking again at temps.

I use GPUZ to report graphics card temp and my 8800gtx gpu reports around 59C/pcb reports as around 55c in antec p180 case, I have good cooling flow in my case (all 3 case fans set on low atm though) and the gtx fan is on auto so it's at 60% speed currently. Card is not overclocked. This is in a small room but it's quite a cool evening tonight. In game gpu temp goes up to the early 70s.

Make it daytime with a hot day and the temps are a bit higher.

Close, 175.16 :D

I've yet to try it out. Still on 169.21

*Note: Quad SLI technology with GeForce 9800 GX2, 3-way SLI technology, and Hybrid SLI technology are only supported on Windows Vista.

only on vista? it doesn't say currently either. Looks like nvidia can't be bothered to code support for it or ms gave them a backhander

Vista is required for any 3 or 4 GPU configuartion including CrossfireX, Tri-SLI or a pair of 9800GX2's.
