Just purchased a second hand 8800GTX and seem to have encountered a bit of a problem, need some help please!

Previously had a 7800GT running flawlessly. I removed the old drivers, removed the old card, installed the 8800GTX, installed the latest vista 64 drivers (180.48) from the nvidia site and everything was working fine.

Tried afew games at high settings and it was smooth, didn't think there was any problem. Later on I got a chance to play for a bit longer, and thats when I started getting the BSOD. It happens in almost every game after a few minutes of playing.

My case only has 1 case fan however cpu idles in the 40s, HDDs all idle in the high 20s, the 8800GTX was idling in the high 50s/low 60s.

I thought maybe the gfx card was overheating, I have just now tried playing UT3 and it was working fine, played for around 15 minutes however to do this I had to have the gfx card fan set to 100%! I also tried it at lower settings and even at around 80-90% I get BSOD.

Is the gfx card faulty?

System spec in sig.

try ati tool bench or furmark and see if there any graphical glitches etc... not sure if it will run 3dmark without having a fit but worth a try

also try a different set of drivers

run driver cleaner and remove all traces of nvidia drivers and install another set from guru3d 180.60?

I'm not seeing any glitches or tears in games, everything looks fine, really good infact, and it plays really well... right up until it freezes and then the blue screen.

When I get a chance to game for abit longer I'll be more certain but I will try it with the fan at 100% because I think it will work ok at this setting although it obviously doesn't do good for my ears!

what does the bluescreen say?

page fault error

nvlddmkm error

give us some info man, of take a pic of the screen if you cant read it lol

Also, is it ok to run a graphics card all the time with the fan at 100% ???

Before i bought an aftermarket cooler for my 8800GTX, i just used to set the fan to 100% before playing then drop it down to about 60'ish when finished.
Also 50-60 is not a high idle temp for an 8800GTX on stock cooling.

For the moment I have downclocked the CPU from 2.8Ghz to 2.6Ghz to see if this has any effect at all, based on the blue screen images I just showed to maddness it was his advice so we shall see! :)
